CLEVELAND (1/12/2013) -- Senior
Yar Shayok tallied a season-high 15 points and posted a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team could not recover from a slow second half start as the Titans fell to Cleveland State, 77-66, on Saturday afternoon at the Wolstein Center.
Shayok was 5-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line collecting her third double-double of the year. Sophomore
Shareta Brown netted 15 points, playing just 21 minutes due to foul trouble, and was 4-of-8 from the field and 7-of-8 at the line. Senior
Demeisha Fambro added 10 points and a season-high three steals.
The Titans (7-7, 0-2 HL) led by two, 38-36, with 18:47 left when the Vikings (10-5, 2-0 HL) went on a 14-1 run to open their largest lead of the game, 50-39, with 14:51 remaining.
Detroit worked hard to stay in the game closing to within six, 54-48, off a basket from junior
Megan Hatter at the 11:15 mark, and then three, 58-55, as sophomore
Audrey Matteson hit a trey and Shayok got loose inside for a bucket with 6:33 on the clock.
CSU would push its lead back to eight, but Detroit fought back to make it a four-point deficit, 65-61, with 2:22 left. From there, the Vikings staved off the Titan comeback to earn the home victory.
Matteson ended the game with nine points and five rebounds, while freshmen
Rosanna Reynolds and
Destiny Lavita-Stephens each had five points apiece. Hatter finished with four points and five rebounds and both Brown and Matteson tallied three assists.
Cleveland State got off to an 8-2 lead early on, but the Titans stormed back with a 15-0 run to jump out in front, 17-8, at the 12:19 mark in the first. Brown had five of her points at that point, while Shayok sparked the offense coming off the bench with six of her first-half 10 points in that spurt.
UDM tied its largest lead of nine two more times at 19-10, with two free throws from Reynolds, and then at 21-12 as Brown hit a pair from the line with 10:36 remaining in the period. UDM maintained its lead for the next eight minutes until the Vikings nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to knot the score at 30-all with 2:48 left.
Detroit quickly untied that as Lavita-Stephens connected on a triple, but Cleveland State would take a 34-33 advantage just a minute later. Detroit then claimed the lead back, 36-34, at the half as Fambro hit a three with 37 seconds left.
The Titans will end their four-game road swing – which includes three straight to open up conference play – on Wednesday as Detroit travels to Wright State. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
