CLEVELAND (10/23/13) -- In a match that lasted three hours due to a stoppage caused by a winter weather system coming through, the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team's late effort fell short against Cleveland State as the Titans were defeated 5-2 at Krenzler Soccer Field on Wednesday night.
Towards the end of the game, a mix of sleet, rain, thunder, lightning and snow began to make its way onto Krenzler Soccer Field and as a result, both teams had to head into the locker room at the 83-minute mark for what turned out to be a 30-minute delay.
Detroit (3-8-4, 0-5 Horizon League) started the contest very solid midway through the first half of play, holding Cleveland State (6-9-0, 2-2 Horizon League) clear of opportunities to get any shots on net. Meanwhile on the offensive end in the 22nd minute,
Matt Ybarra sent a ball down the pitch to a sitting
Trevor Flynn, but the one touch went high and kept UDM from taking an early lead.
Taking advantage of the missed shot by Flynn, Cleveland State's Amari Williams found Admir Sujeciv to put the Vikings on the scoreboard first. Shortly after, Sujeciv was on the move again this time off a pass from Sergio Manesio to push the score to 2-0.
UDM had a chance to answer back, but
Adam Bedell's header towards the end of the half nearly put the Titans back in the match, but the CSU keeper grabbed it just in time to keep the Titans scoreless.
Coming out of the half, Detroit needed to make some moves to get back into the match, but after a penalty in the box, Sujeciv added his third goal of the game in 49th minute for a 3-0 advantage.
The Titans then started to fight their way back. In previous matches, it was usually Ybarra finding Bedell for a scoring opportunity, but the script was flipped this go around. Bedell beat a Viking defender near the sideline and found Ybarra for his first goal of the season in the 72nd minute to close the deficit to 3-1.
The two teams then traded scores down the stretch as freshman
Zachary Atwood headed in a goal for UDM, the second of his collegiate career, but the Vikings added an insurance goal from Giancarlo Cuomo shortly after as the Titans fell 5-2.
UDM will next travel to the Sunshine State for its final nonconference match of the season against the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Game Notes:
Matt Ybarra's goal was his first of 2013 … The five goals given up by the Titans were the most since a 5-3 Horizon League opener defeat to Milwaukee (9/28) …
Zachary Atwood scored his second collegiate goal.
