Detroit Falls in Wet and Windy Affair at Milwaukee

Box Score

MILWAUKEE (10/5/2013) -- There was a 35 minute lightning delay, along with thunder, and plenty of rain in a hard-fought game but the end result was a tough 2-1 loss for the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team Saturday to the Milwaukee Panthers from Engelmann Field.

The game was originally scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. ET but lightning delayed the start time to 5:35 p.m. Rain continued to be on and off during the game with the wind causing the ball to move all over the place.

"I think early in the game we gave up a bad goal and the second goal was unlucky with the deflection but we came back and had a strong effort," said UDM head coach Mike Lupenec. "We had some opportunities to tie the game and we have to capitalize but we also have to work on our defensive game moving forward."

The first goal of the game was scored by the home team as Milwaukee broke through in the 15th minute. At 14:42, the Panthers (4-7-1, 2-0 Horizon League) went up 1-0 over Detroit (5-6-1, 0-2 Horizon League) in a largely uneventful first half for the Titans.

Heading into the break, Milwaukee had a 7-2 edge in overall shots over Detroit but the Titans had two corner kicks to just one for the home team. UDM also had no shots on goal in the first half.

Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead in the 56th minute as a Milwaukee cross changed direction and went into the goal off a Titan defender for an own goal.

The game was far from over as UDM weathered the stormed and came back on the combination of junior Alyssa Riley and senior Kaitlyn Quarrell. Riley forced a turnover at midfield and played the ball to Quarrell who made a nice move on a defender just at the top of the 18-yard box (WATCH AT 0:39). Quarrell finished the job tallying her team-leading fourth goal of the year firing a laser that hit the crossbar and in to make it a 2-1 game at 58:58.

Sophomore goalkeeper Martha Dunbar played the first half making three saves and added six more in the second half to keep the Titans in the game.

Despite a strong push in the final 10 minutes in monsoon-type conditions, Milwaukee held on and finish with a 16-6 overall shooting advantage and keep its Horizon League record perfect at 2-0.

In honor of breast cancer, Milwaukee wore grey jerseys with pink numbers and lettering for the game.

The Titans will return home and face Marygrove in the final non-conference match-up of the regular season Monday at 3:00 p.m.
