MILWAUKEE, Wis. (11/8/2013) -- Another season for the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team came to a close Friday evening in the Horizon League Semifinals as the Detroit Titans fell 3-0 to the Milwaukee Panthers.
Goals from the five-time Horizon League women's soccer defending champion Milwaukee in the 18th minute, the 23rd minute, and then one final tally in the 71st minute lifted the Panthers in the win. The Titans (11-8-1) were the No. 4 seed and Milwaukee (9-8-1) was the No. 1 seed.
"We didn't play our best game tonight but you have to give a lot of credit to Milwaukee," said UDM head coach
Mike Lupenec. "I want to thank the senior for what they have done especially Abby and Kate who have been here four years and have helped turn a losing program into a winning program."
An early shot came from Milwaukee 1:11 into the game but the Panthers got on the board first as an initial shot from Kelsey Holbert hit the crossbar and the rebound came right back to Krissy Dorre. Dorre's header bounced in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead at 17:53.
A second Milwaukee tally came off nice touch passes as Dorre passed it to the Horizon League Player of the Year Kelly Lewers who set up Vienna Behnke for the goal and a 2-0 lead at 22:49.
In the 36th minute, the Titans had a turning point in the game with a great offensive opportunity. Junior defender
Alyssa Lotito made a beautiful long pass to senior
Kaitlyn Quarrell who sprinted past the opposing defender to create a 1-on-1 opportunity with the goalkeeper. The Milwaukee goalkeeper ended up clipping Quarrell and taking her down in the box but no call was made and all was not well in Milwaukee as the Titan bench was in an uproar. After Quarrell was able to get up, the ball was harmlessly kicked away with the home team still up by a 2-0 score.
The score would stay the same as the first half ended with Milwaukee up 7-3 in total shots and 3-1 on goal. The Titans did have a 3-2 edge in corner kicks in the opening frame.
The second half started slow for the Titans but Milwaukee was playing defensively allowing Detroit the opportunity for an offensive counter to get back into the game.
Junior
Alyssa Riley stepped up and played a nice ball to sophomore
Jennifer Borawski just outside the 18-yard box and Borawski's quick shot went just wide and to the right at 57:20.
A third Milwaukee goal made a comeback even more difficult as a long Panther goal went in at 70:41 for a 3-0 lead.
UDM generated one more good offensive opportunity as sophomore
Sara Zawacki had a shot in the 75th minute after creating room for herself and taking a high and hard shot that was saved.
The loss also brings the careers of three seniors to a close as seniors
Abby McCollum,
Kaitlyn Quarrell, and
Ashley Welch have all had different and memorable careers with the Titans.
Welch came to UDM as a junior transfer in 2012 and has seen time in various roles over her two years at Detroit with a lot of her effort seen during practice and being a team leader on the bench. McCollum and Quarrell have been with the Titans for four years and in 32 home games, have seen just five losses and have outscored opponents 74-11. Quarrell has played in 77 games and McCollum saw time in 67 contests. Quarrell finished tied for ninth on the UDM all-time career goals list with 21 and McCollum stands in a tie for eighth on the all-time career assists list with 14. The two came in and helped a 3-13-2 overall team in 2009 to four straight Horizon League Semifinals appearances and 40 overall wins in 77 games.
This year's squad finished 4-3 in the Horizon League and a Titan single-season best eight wins and a perfect 8-0 at home outscoring opponents 23-0. The 11 total wins tied the fifth-best mark in program history while junior
Alyssa Lotito finished the regular season leading the Horizon League with 10 assists and is currently 12th in the NCAA in total assists with 11. The defense posted 10 overall shutouts including four in league play and played in a playoff game at Titan Field for just the fourth time in the team's history.
The 2013 Horizon League awards were littered with Titans as junior
Alyssa Riley and senior
Kaitlyn Quarrell were both named to the All-Horizon League First Team. Lotito took home All-Horizon League Second Team recognition and freshmen
Anna Mindling,
Kaitlan Vossen, and
Carley Rice all made the All-Horizon League Newcomer Team.
