VALPARAISO, Ind. (11/9/2013) – In its final game of the 2013 season, the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team fell to Valparaiso, 1-0, on Saturday night at Brown Field.
In the opening half, Valparaiso (5-7-5, 2-3-2 HL) was able to put pressure on the Titans (3-11-4, 0-7 HL) back line, but
Nathan Steinwascher maintained his ground and made key saves to keep the match even, finishing with five in the game.
The Crusaders continued to push forward as they knew coming into the match they could lock up the final spot in next week's Horizon League Tournament with a win over Detroit. Jesse Ortiz put Valparaiso in the lead off a bending shot from the right side of the field to just inside the left post to give the Crusaders a 1-0 advantage with 23 seconds remaining after a feisty first half of play.

In the final half of the season, both teams ramped up the pressure on the offensive end, but both goalkeepers protected their respective ends. In particular, Steinwascher made a pair of diving saves off a defensive breakdown to keep the game in reach for the red, white and blue.
Looking for the equalizer,
Matt Ybarra snuck behind the Valpo backline and found himself one on one with the Valpo keeper, but the shot sailed just high of the top post in the 73rd minute as the Titans finished up the 2013 season.

Adam Bedell finishes his career amongst the best in the UDM record book. Livonia, Mich. native completes his career sixth all time in career points (67) , goals (23) and assists (22) ... Junior goalkeeper
Nathan Steinwascher came up just one save shy of the century mark on the season. The 99 saves by Steinwascher were the most by a UDM keeper since Jason Hood recorded 103 in 1992 ... The Titans scored 18 goals on the season, just one goal ahead of the school record for fewest goals scored in a season (17).
