Minnerath Leads Titans Past Vikings, 92-62

– Two Titans recorded double-doubles, while another joined the 1,000-point club as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team bounced back with an impressive 92-62 win over Cleveland State Tuesday night at Calihan Hall.

The win is the 12th for the Titans at home this season, which ties the number for the most home wins during the regular season since 2001-02. The win also placed Detroit (17-9, 9-4 HL) solely in second place in the Horizon League.

Senior forward Nick Minnerath led Detroit with 34 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, while junior guard Ray McCallum scored 16 points with 13 boards, eight assists and four steals. Classmate Jason Calliste scored 19 points with five assists and became the 38th Titan to join the 1,000-point club with 1,001, while Doug Anderson added nine points.

UDM led at the half, 42-24, before being outscoring the Vikings, 50-38, in the second stanza. Cleveland State (12-14, 4-8 HL) trimmed the Titans lead to 46-33 with 16:48 left, before Detroit closed the game on 46-29 run. 

Detroit opened the game with 15-5 run, including a pair of highflying Anderson dunks, before taking a 28-11 lead with just eight minutes left in the half. The Vikings trimmed the lead to 28-16 with a 5-0 run, but Detroit answered back with an 8-0 spurt to build a 36-16 lead with four minutes left. Both teams then exchanged baskets and Detroit took a 42-24 lead into the locker room. Minnerath led all scorers with 14 points in the first half, while Calliste had 11 and Anderson had nine.

The Titans ended the game shooting 44.4 percent (32-72) from the field, including 84.6 percent (22-26) from the charity stripe, while Cleveland State shot 46.0 percent (23-50) overall, including 68.4 percent (13-19) from the foul line. Detroit also won the battle of the boards, 46-25, while forcing 16 turnovers and dishing out 17 assists.

Bryn Forbes finished with 14 points to lead Cleveland State, while Marlin Mason added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Detroit will visit Valparaiso on Saturday, Feb. 16. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. ET at the ARC and will be televised live on ESPN2.


GAME NOTES: Jason Calliste is the 38th Titan to join the 1,000-point club, and the fourth over the last two years … Nick Minnerath has now recorded two double-doubles this season along with scoring 30 or more points twice … Ray McCallum is closing in on becoming the first Titan to ever record 1,500 points (1,490), 500 rebounds (453), 500 assists (424) and 150 steals (161) … Detroit leads the all-time series against Cleveland State 37-18.
