VALPARAISO, Ind. (3/9/2013) -- Playing against a spirited Valparaiso team on Senior Day, the Detroit Titans saw the Crusaders go on an offensive surge in the second half as UDM was tripped up, 73-53, at the ARC on Saturday afternoon.
The loss means that UDM (16-12, 9-7 HL) will now have to see if Loyola losses to UIC in order to be the third seed in the Horizon League Championship. Detroit is already assured at least a four seed and a home game against Wright State in the HL Quarterfinals next Wednesday, but the only thing left to be decided is if the UDM-WSU match-up will be a 3-6 or a 4-5.
Senior
Demeisha Fambro had a team-high 17 points, while sophomore
Shareta Brown tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds for her third-straight double-double.
Detroit led 34-31 at the half, but that was erased early as Valpo (10-19, 5-11 HL) tied it three times before it jumped in front by one, 42-41, at the 16:32 mark. The teams then traded a one-point lead over the next few minutes until senior
Yar Shayok hit a jumper and freshman
Rosanna Reynolds got inside for a layup giving UDM a 47-44 lead with 12:51 left.
That was the last time Detroit would have the lead as Valparaiso closed the game on a 29-6 run to down the Titans.
Junior
Senee Shearer and sophomore
Audrey Matteson had six points apiece on a pair of 3-pointers, while Shayok ended with two points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Reynolds handed out four helpers and scored five points and junior
Megan Hatter collected four boards and had a block to go with a basket.
The Titans tied their season high with 12 steals and had nine 3-pointers on their 20-field goals. Valpo was able to shoot 49.1% (27-of-55) and won the rebounding battle, 42-27.
Detroit jumped out to a fast start as Fambro had two 3-pointers and Shearer and Reynolds added one each to give UDM a 12-9 lead. The Titans then led 14-12 at the 14:36 mark, but the Crusaders scored 10-straight points to take a 22-14 lead midway through the first half.
The red, white and blue responded with an 18-4 spurt over the next seven minute to regain the lead. Fambro started that with a trey and then Brown had a layup and a 3-pointer of her own to knot the score at 22-all before Matteson nailed a three to push the Titans in front.
That lead was short lived as the Crusaders tallied a three, but a pair of free throws from Brown and Shearer's second three of the game gave Detroit a 30-25 advantage. Almost two minutes later, Hatter's lone basket of the contest had the Titans up, 32-26, with 3:43 left.
Detroit will now move onto the Horizon League Championship, where they will open play with a home quarterfinals game on Wednesday against Wright State at 7:00 p.m. The highest remaining seed left after the quarterfinals will host the conference semifinals and championship.
