DETROIT (9/17/2013) -- After seven road games to start the season, the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team opened its 2013 home slate with a dominating 3-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University Falcons Tuesday afternoon from Titan Field.
Three different goal scorers contributed to the Titan offense as senior
Kaitlyn Quarrell, sophomore
Jennifer Borawski, and senior
Abby McCollum each scored once while sophomore
Heather Brown had two assists and junior
Alyssa Lotito also had a helper for Detroit (3-4-1).
"You're always happy with a win," said UDM head coach
Mike Lupenec. "I think we played well and possessed the ball well but we still have to get sharper in the final third of the field. I told our forwards to be more aggressive especially our wide players and we did today."
UDM controlled possession throughout the duration of play holding an overall 21-4 shooting advantage including 9-1 in the first half that resulted in a 1-0 Detroit lead at the end of the opening frame. The Titans finished with 11 shots on goal while BGSU (0-5) had zero.
Quarrell scored in the 21st minute as she took a long cross from Brown and scored on a shot that went through a Bowling Green defender for a 1-0 Titan lead.
Borawski then took a pass from Lotito and Lotito's swift pass inside the six-yard box was tapped in by Borawski for her first goal of the season at 61:20.
The third tally of the contest came from McCollum who received the ball from Brown and McCollum recorded her second goal of the season and the second Titan goal from inside the six-yard box.
UDM sophomore goalkeeper
Martha Dunbar played the entire 90 minutes and did not have to make a save for her second shutout of the season.
The next game for Detroit will be Sunday as UDM will be part of a doubleheader at Titan Field. The men's soccer team will play Canisius at 11:00 a.m. and immediately following the men's game, the women's team will match up with Stetson shortly after 1:00 p.m.
