DETROIT (9/22/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team hosted a Jesuit rival on Sunday and despite some quality chances, the Titans could not get that winning goal as UDM fell to Canisius, 1-0, at Titan Field in the first game of a soccer doubleheader. Nathan Steinwascher made three saves in the game and appeared to be on his way to another shutout, but a handball on Detroit in the box gave the visiting Golden Griffins (3-3-1) a penalty kick opportunity, which they converted for the lone goal of the match at the 71:47 mark.
The Titans totaled eight shots on the day, including six in the second half, but UDM (0-3-4) could not get the equalizer. Detroit had two chances in the last 20 minutes off corner kicks, but was just not able to get the right look at the net.
The last 10 minutes also featured two shots from Detroit that were blocked as junior
Matt Ybarra had an attempt at 80:59, while senior
Adam Bedell's was at 84:28. The action then really started to get going with a pair of yellow cards handed to Detroit in the last five minutes and a yellow and a red issued to Canisius at 85:38, giving UDM a man-up opportunity for the last 4:22 of the contest.
The Titans will now get ready for Horizon League play as they host Milwaukee this Saturday, Sept. 28, at 3:00 p.m. The game will be live streamed on the Horizon League Network with a tape delay on local Comcast.
