DETROIT (9/28/13) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team posted a season-high three goals in a 5-3 defeat to Milwaukee Saturday afternoon in the first match of Horizon League play.
On an afternoon where the 2012 Horizon League regular season championship banner was unveiled at Titan Field and the start of another season of conference play; the Titans were focusing on starting off on the right foot.
Milwaukee (7-0-1) came into the contest as the lone unbeaten program in the conference, and was able to find the scoreboard first on a cross from Austin Toth who found Aaron Horvat to give the Panthers their first lead of the game just 12 minutes into the half.
Now battling back from behind and in need of a goal, Detroit scored off a cross from Trevor Flynn to senior captain Kevin Pinkos who put it in just under the top right cross bar to even the match at one going into the half.
One thing that has been difficult for the Titans in 2013 has been the lack of goal scoring in the second half – until today. Pinkos, who recorded his first goal of the 2013 season earlier in the first half, sent a cross from the left side of the pitch to a sitting Adam Bedell and gave UDM a 2-1 lead, its first of the match.
However, the lead did not last long, in fact the Panthers scored three goals in less than six minutes. Lauire Bell added one of for himself and a pair from Horvat gave Milwaukee a 4-2 advantage with 37 minutes remaining in the match.
Shortly after, Pinkos continued his involvement in the match, finding freshman Tyler Moorman on a corner kick for the first goal of his career and brought the Titans within one goal of the Panthers.
But unfortunately for UDM, Horvat was having arguably his best game of his young career. The forward responded the only way he knew, with a goal. The sophomore finished the match with four goals, and the Panthers would go onto remain undefeated with a 5-3 win over the Titans.
UDM will take a minor break from Horizon League play when it travels to Fort Wayne, Ind. to take on IPFW on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m., before heading to Oakland on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. for another Horizon League match.
