Quarrell Nets Golden Goal over Golden Griffins
Detroit made the trip to Buffalo, N.Y. on Friday evening to play the Canisius Golden Griffins and senior Kaitlyn Quarrell scored her second goal of the game, taking a pass from Alyssa Riley, with 2:56 remaining in double overtime to help the Titans win a 2-1 decision. Quarrell scored the other Titan goal just 4:05 into the game and finished with 14 shots for Detroit, eight on goal, as she helped her team to 34 overall shots compared to 17 for Canisius.
Cali
The Titans are coming off a 1-1 weekend on the west coast. On Friday, Detroit faced the No. 18 team in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings falling by a 2-1 score and Sunday UDM won a 1-0 overtime match at San Francisco. Against California, Detroit was peppered 19-2 in overall shots but a goal from senior Abby McCollum on a penalty kick at the 52:28 mark inched the Titans closer but the final would stay 2-1. In the San Francisco contest, junior Alyssa Riley was the hero scoring the golden goal with 39 seconds left in the first overtime period as she took a pass from junior defender Alyssa Lotito. The win was the first for Detroit in the state of California after a 0-5-1 record entering the San Francisco contest.
Raise the "Dun" Bar
UDM sophomore goalkeeper Martha Dunbar made a career high eight saves in Sunday's 1-0 overtime win over San Francisco. The saves helped Dunbar record both her first ever collegiate win and shutout despite the Titans being outshot 19-2 at California and 18-6 at San Francisco for a 37-8 weekend overall total. With five saves at California in Friday's 2-1 loss, her 13 total saves earned Dunbar the Women's Soccer Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for the first Horizon League honor of her career. Dunbar has played in all four of the team's games this year making three starts.
Titans are the Early Favorite
The Titans will have new pressure this season after being picked as the team to win the Horizon League in a poll conducted by the HL coaches. The poll results break a streak of 13-straight years that Milwaukee has been picked first. This year, Detroit garnered six of seven first place votes for 47 overall points. Wright State was second with one first place vote and 38 points with five-time Horizon League women's soccer defending champion Milwaukee taking the other first place vote and 36 points. Horizon League newcomer Oakland was picked fourth (32) followed by Valparaiso (31), Youngstown State (16), Green Bay (15), and Cleveland State (9).
Canisius
The Golden Griffins are 1-3-1 in 2013. The first two games of their season were against Horizon League opponents with a 3-2 loss at Cleveland State and then a 1-0 win over the Youngstown State. The Golden Griffins then fell 2-0 to St. Bonaventure and followed that with a pair of games in Charleston S.C. falling 5-3 to Charleston Southern on Aug. 30 and playing to a 1-1 draw to The Citadel on Sept. 1. Detroit and Canisius will meet for the second time ever after the Titans won a 4-0 home decision a year ago. That game saw UDM senior Kaitlyn Quarrell score three goals in what was the 175th career head coaching victory for Mike Lupenec.
Notre Dame
The Titans and Fighting Irish will meet for the third time on Sunday. Notre Dame has hosted every contest between the two and has combined to outscore Detroit 15-1 in the previous matches. The last meeting was in 2000 and the other two were in 1993 and 1994 before Notre Dame left the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. Notre Dame is currently ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA rankings and is 3-1 overall this year. The Irish opened the season with 4-1 home wins over both Illinois and Northwestern before a 4-0 home win against Oakland. The lone blemish in the early season for Notre Dame was a 1-0 loss to this week's No. 3 team in the NSCAA poll, UCLA. The Bruins played at Notre Dame on Sept. 1 escaping with a 1-0 victory netting a goal in the 80th minute.
The Long Journey (Almost) Home
Detroit will play in Ann Arbor on Thursday, Sept. 12 to face the Michigan Wolverines at 7:00 p.m. It will be the final road game of the seven straight UDM had to start the year before returning to Titan Field for the season opener on Sept. 17 at 3:00 p.m. against Bowling Green.
