The Titans improved to 6-5-1 overall, while Madonna dropped to 7-6.
The victory was the third straight by a 1-0 score for the Titans.
Detroit scored the lone goal of the game in the 78th minute as senior defender
Haley Burtraw (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) fired a ball into the box, which was corralled by senior midfielder
Alyssa Riley (Whitby, Ont. / Father Leo J. Austin). Riley quickly fired the ball into the back of the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
"Give credit to Madonna, they played well defensively," UDM head coach
Mike Lupenec said. "We had several chances offensively that we couldn't finish, but we were able to get one on the scoreboard. Our defense played well again and allowed us to win."
Detroit finished the game with 16 shots compared to three from the Crusaders. The Titans also had 10 corner kicks in the contest, which was a season high.
Both teams had good chances offensively in the first half. Detroit sophomore
Anna Mindling (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) had a clear look at goal, but fired a shot that Madonna goalkeeper Blaire Schmalenberg turned away. The Crusaders later nearly took the lead in the game as Jessica Witt's shot hit the crossbar.
Madonna had a late chance offensively after being awarded a free kick just outside of the box. MU's shot sailed into the waiting arms of freshman goalkeeper
Marina Manzo (Washington Township, Mich. / Romeo). Manzo finished the game with two saves in recording her sixth shutout of the season.
Riley finished with six shots overall and three on goal, while
Kristen Tobin (Bay City, Mich. / John Glenn) had two shots for the Titans.
Detroit improved to 15-0-1 in its last 16 games at home dating back to the 2012 season. The Titans are 3-0-1 at home this year and have recorded three shutouts at Titan Field.
The Titans return to the road this weekend, visiting Green Bay for a Horizon League match on Saturday. The game is set for a 2 p.m. ET start.
