Box Score DETROIT (10/29/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team had several good offensive looks Wednesday and out-shot visiting Bowling Green State University 19-13 in the match, but the Falcons knocked off the Titans in double overtime 1-0. It was the regular-season home finale for Detroit at Titan Field.
The lone goal of the game was scored with just 1:18 left in the second overtime. One of the top goal scorers in the nation, sophomore Pat Flynn found a seam on the right side of the box and fired past Detroit goalkeeper
Nathan Steinwascher for the game-winning goal. The goal was Flynn's 13th of the season.
Detroit (8-5-3) had several strong offensive chances throughout the contest, but had several point blank looks turned away. BGSU goalkeeper Ryan Heuton made eight saves in net for the Falcons (10-5-1).
UDM had a good look in the latter stages of the first half as freshman forward
Don Nakashima (Novi, Mich. / Novi) received a pass from senior midfielder
Matt Ybarra (Irvine, Calif. / Ann Arbor Huron) in the box and fired a shot that Heuton challenged and knocked away.
Detroit had three shots in the span of three minutes just after halftime, including a good look by sophomore midfielder
Adam Clauss (Grand Haven, Mich. / Spring Lake), but his strong shot on goal was again turned away by Heuton. The Titans had two corner kicks in the last two minutes of the game, but two Detroit shots were blocked in the resulting opportunities.
The Titans had the only looks on goal in the first overtime frame, as Ybarra sent a shot high and junior defender
Jacob Prud'homme (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) sent a header that was saved by Heuton.
Steinwascher made two clutch saves in the second overtime session, sprawling out for a save on a rocket sent in by BGSU's Jacob Roth, after he was awarded a free kick just outside of the box. Steinwascher added another save just seconds late off a Falcon corner kick. Bowling Green had four shots in the second overtime period.
For the game, Detroit held advantages in shots (19-13) and corner kicks (9-2). Pliakos had a game-high seven shots for Detroit, while Prud'homme, Clauss and Ybarra each had three shots for the Titans.
Bowling Green's goal ended Detroit's four-game shutout streak. The Titans finished with a shutout streak of 519 minutes overall, dating back to their Oct. 7 draw against IPFW.
The Titans have three road games remaining on the 2014 regular season schedule. Detroit travels to Belmont on Saturday for a Horizon League matchup and its first-ever meeting with the Bruins In Nashville, Tenn. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
