Tyler Moorman scored 5:07 into overtime Saturday to complete the comeback and lead the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team to a key 2-1 overtime victory on the road at UIC. With the victory, Detroit (5-4-1 overall) earned its second Horizon League victory of the season and improved to 2-1 in conference play.
Detroit trailed 1-0 at halftime, but scored the game's final two goals for the win. It's the second time in a week that the Titans have earned a come-from-behind victory in league play. Detroit also turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory in its league opener at home against Wright State on Sept. 27.
The Flames (5-3-2, 1-1-1 HL), last year's regular season champions, took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute on a goal by leading goal-scorer Jorge Alvarez. The goal was the lone tally in the first half and Detroit trailed at halftime, 1-0.
In the second half, Detroit would knot the game 1-1 on a goal by junior defender
Jason Leslie (Troy, Mich. / Troy) in the 68th minute. On a free kick, freshman midfielder
Spiro Pliakos (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) found Leslie, who headed home his second goal of the season.
Neither team would find the back of the net for the rest of regulation. In overtime, Detroit took control, posting four shots and one corner kick in the first five minutes of the extra period. Just past the halfway point of the first overtime, Moorman (Caledonia, Mich. / East Kentwood) received a pass from Pliakos and shot from the right side and into the back of the net.
Moorman's goal was his first of the season and second career goal.
Junior goalkeeper
Nathan Steinwascher (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) made six saves in net to earn his fifth victory of the season. He entered the game against UIC first in the conference in saves and saves per match. Pliakos had assists on both goals for the Titans and leads the squad with six assists and eight points. All six of his assists have come in the last five games for the Titans.
UIC led in shots for the match, 14-12, but Detroit out-shot the Flames in overtime, 4-0. Each team had four corner kicks.
Detroit has played in five overtime games this season. The Titans are 2-2-1 in overtime games, having also earned a win in their season-opener at Western Michigan.
The Titans next play a non-conference match, hosting IPFW on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The contest is slated to start at 4 p.m. at Titan Field.
