Box Score DETROIT (10/7/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team out-shot IPFW 29-12 in their Tuesday non-conference matchup, but the two teams battled through two overtimes to a 1-1 tie at Titan Field.
It was the third straight game that Detroit (5-4-2) has played in overtime. The Titans were coming off a 2-1 overtime victory at UIC on Saturday.
The game remained scoreless until the 59th minute when IPFW's Corey Tom scored on an assist from Cameron Sinclair. Detroit would counter, however, as just a little more than five minutes later junior
Matt Harkema (Hudsonville, Mich. / Unity Christian) fired a shot into the top left corner of the goal to tie the game. Harkema's third goal of the season came off an assist from junior defender
Jason Leslie (Troy, Mich. / Troy).
Detroit had several good looks at the goal and out-shot the Mastodons in the second half, 17-3. Before Harkema's goal, freshman midfielder
Spiro Pliakos (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) hit the crossbar with a shot. Pliakos had a strong chance for a goal in the final minute of regulation, pushing his shot just wide of the goal.
Detroit junior defender
Jacob Prud'homme (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) nearly ended the game in the second overtime, heading a ball in the box just to the left of the goal.
Pliakos finished with seven shots for the contest to lead both teams. Pliakos and senior
Matt Ybarra (Irvine, Calif. / Ann Arbor Huron) each had three shots on goal. Sophomores
Adam Clauss (Grand Haven, Mich. / Spring Lake) and
Tyler Moorman (Caledonia, Mich. / East Kentwood) each had four shots for the Titans.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Robbie Beckwell (Shelby Township, Mich. / Henry Ford II) made his first collegiate start for the Titans and made five saves in net. He made a strong save in the first overtime as IPFW fired a free kick on net that Beckwell turned away.
IPFW goalkeeper Cody Schweitzer made 12 saves in goal. Britt Watts and Corey Tom each had four shots to lead the Mastodons (3-5-4).
The Titans return to Horizon League play Saturday, hosting Green Bay for a 1 p.m. match at Titan Field. Detroit is 2-1 in league play after three games.
