MADISON, Wis. (11/14/2014) --
Freshman Taylor Smith was the first Titan to cross the finish line and senior Sara Taylor became just the 14th Titan to run in four NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships as the University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country team was in action on Friday at the annual postseason event.

The 6k NCAA GLR was held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course on the campus of Wisconsin, where the starting race temperature was a brisk 22 °F.

As a team, Detroit was 29th totaling 829 points.

Smith led the Titans with a time of 22:53, just three seconds shy of her season best at the Horizon League Championships just two weeks ago, as she was 142nd overall. The 142nd-place is also the best by a Titan freshman since LeAnn Sarka was 100th in 2004.

Running in her final collegiate cross country race, senior Sara Taylor was just three seconds behind her career low as she claimed 150th in 23:03. It was still the best time and finish that she has ever posted in her four NCAA GLR runs.

Freshman Sydnie Fetherolf earned 164th in 23:12, while senior Zeinab Baydoun took 180th with a time of 23:36, besting her previous regional best of 24:04 in 2011.

Sophomore Devon Sutton was the fifth Titan in taking 193rd with a 24:05. Two other freshmen made their first NCAA GLR appearance as Jenny Ponkowski posted a season-low 24:14 for 195th and Sydney Shaw rounded out the group clocking in at 25:19 for 216th.

With the event concluded, the 31st season of women's cross country came to an end. On the year, Detroit had a pair of runner-up efforts and was fifth at the Horizon League Championships, where UDM saw three harriers get under 23:00 minutes in the 6k for the first time in school history.
