Box Score KALAMAZOO (8/29/2014) -- Sophomore
Adam Clauss scored on a penalty kick 27 seconds into overtime Friday to lift the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory in its season opening game at Western Michigan University. Detroit's victory was its first in a season-opener since 2011, while it also spoiled the Broncos home opener in front of 401 people at the WMU Soccer Complex.
The Broncos tied the game 1-1 with just under four minutes remaining in regulation. Still, the Titans (1-0-0) would not be deterred and found momentum early in overtime.
"I couldn't be more proud of these guys and how they competed," UDM head coach
Nicholas Deren '99 said. "We went into overtime and we went after them. That was awesome to see. In the past, we didn't always do that. We were confident as a team."
Clauss' game-winner was his first collegiate goal in his first career game. The sophomore missed his entire freshman season due to an injury.
The game was scoreless at halftime, but Detroit took the lead in the second half on sophomore
Matt DeVries' goal inside the box. DeVries hammered home a loose ball from six yards out for his first collegiate goal. Senior
Matt Ybarra assisted on the goal that gave the Titans a 1-0 lead.
Western Michigan (0-1-0) tied the game up 1-1 with less than four minutes to go as Connor Furgason scored on a header off a free kick.
Detroit wasted little time attacking the goal in overtime, as freshman
Don Nakashima was able to get behind the defense. A Western Michigan defender slapped the ball away in the box, giving the Titans a penalty kick and setting up Clauss' game-winning PK.
Senior goalkeeper
Nathan Steinwascher earned the win in net for the Titans, making three saves.
The Broncos led in corner kicks (7-2) and shots (9-3) for the game.
The Titans next play Friday, Sept. 5 in the University of Dayton Marriott Classic Tournament. Detroit faces Northern Kentucky in its tournament opener at 5 p.m. at Baujan Field.
