Detroit Rolls to 2-0 Road Victory at IPFW

Box Score

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (8/29/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team scored three minutes into the game Friday and never looked back, earning a 2-0 road victory over IPFW at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The Titans improved to 1-1-0 with the triumph.

Detroit scored just 3:31 into the contest as sophomore Anna Mindling took a pass from senior Alyssa Lotito and sent the ball past the keeper into the right corner of the goal. Mindling's first goal of the season gave Detroit a 1-0 lead early.

The score stayed 1-0 until after halftime when the Titans found the back of the net again. Sophomore forward Aubrey Formica rocketed a shot past IPFW's keeper for her second career goal and first of the season. Classmate Carley Rice assisted on the goal to give UDM a 2-0 lead in the 71st minute.

"Aubrey Formica scoing the goal off the bench and giving us some energy was huge," Detroit head coach Mike Lupenec said. "Give kudos to Anna Mindling. She scored the first goal and she controlled the game up top and was able to get the midfielders involved. She played the entire game and was a force. I don't think we would have won without her."

Freshman goalkeeper Marina Manzo, making her first career start, came up with a strong save late in the game to preserve the shutout. Manzo played the entire game and finished with four saves.

"It was a hard fought battle," Lupenec said. "Give credit to the back line and the freshman goalie. She had a big save late in the game. She did what she had to do. It could have been a big momentum switch. The back line was excellent."

UDM finished with 13 shots compared to IPFW's 11. Detroit also edged the Mastodons in corner kicks, 5-2, while taking less fouls (five) to IPFW's 14.

The Titans next host Central Michigan on Sunday for their home opener. The start of the game is set for 1 p.m.
at Titan Field.
