Box Score DAYTON, Ohio (9/5/2014) -- For the second-straight game, the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team played into overtime, but unlike the season opener, the Titans fell on the wrong side of a 1-0 defeat to Northern Kentucky University.
The Titans (1-1) were playing in the opener of the Dayton Flyer Classic, hosted by the University of Dayton at Baujan Field. After a scoreless 90 minutes of soccer, Northern Kentucky scored 4:17 into overtime as Caleb Eastham scored on a header for the Norse (1-0-1).
Detroit started the game strong offensively, producing four shots before the Norse could record their first shot. At halftime, Detroit had the edge in shots, 4-3, however Northern Kentucky had the only two shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Nathan Steinwascher (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) made two saves in net during the first half and had four overall for the game.
Freshman
Spiro Pliakos (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester), playing in his first collegiate game, had two of the four shots for Detroit during the first half. The Titans finished with nine shots during the contest and Pliakos, senior
Matt Ybarra (Irvine, Calif. / Ann Arbor Huron) and senior
Cameron Roberts (Redford, Mich. / University of Detroit Jesuit) each paced the squad with two each.
Northern Kentucky also had nine total shots for the game. Detroit held the edge in corner kicks, 6-5, although NKU had two corner kicks during the overtime period. Detroit committed 15 fouls, compared to nine for the Norse.
Detroit returns to the pitch at 2 p.m. Sunday to play in the Dayton Flyer Classic finale against tournament host Dayton.
