YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (1/28/2015) -- An incredible 22-4 run to start the second half propelled the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team to erase a double-digit deficit as the Titans iced the Youngstown State Penguins, 59-58, on Wednesday night at the Beeghly Center.
Three Titans scored in double figures led by redshirt sophomore
Rosanna Reynolds, who collected her fourth double-double of the season and fifth of her career with a team-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, while dishing out a team-best seven assists.
Senior
Ellisha Crosby registered 13 points with five rebounds and freshman
Darianne Seward had 10 points and seven boards.
The Titans (8-12, 3-4 HL) trailed by 16 points at the break, 35-19, but started the second half on a 14-0 run. The offense woke up connecting on 7-of-12 from the field – after going just 7-of-33 in the first half alone – while the defense forced Youngstown State (14-5, 3-3 HL) into missing its first 10 shots with four turnovers.
Reynolds got the comeback going with six-straight points and then Seward took over scoring the next eight in a row to cut the YSU lead to just two, 35-33, with 13:09 left.
Youngstown State stopped that with back-to-back buckets, but the Titans countered with an 8-0 spurt to take the lead as freshman
Nicole Urbanick hit a trey and after another Penguins' turnover, Reynolds went inside to make it 39-38. After Detroit held Youngstown State scoreless on its next possession, Reynolds came down and drilled a 3-pointer giving the red, white and blue a 41-39 lead with 7:41 left, the Titans first lead since 5-3 in the opening minutes.
Both teams traded the lead after that and the game would be tied at 43-all when the Titans extended their advantage to as many as five, 51-46, thanks to 3-pointers from Crosby and sophomore
Haleigh Ristovski, the latter with 3:36 remaining. The Penguins would knot it all up at 51-51 and again at 53-53, but Seward was able to find her way to the rim for a layup and a 55-53 lead at the 1:39 mark.
The Titans would never trail after that hitting some key free throws and not turning the ball over again a pressing defense as they snapped Youngstown State's nine-game home winning streak.
Ristovski ended the game with eight points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Urbanick had nine on three 3-pointers.
Detroit shot 56.7 percent (17-of-30) in the second half and was 8-of-16 from behind the arc in the contest. UDM evened the rebounding total at 42-42, after trailing by five at the half, and also forced 10 turnovers, turning those into 14 key points. Detroit's defense limited YSU to 6-of-25 (24.0%) in the second stanza and 1-of-12 (8.3%) from three-point range after the Penguins had eight from downtown in the opening frame.
Both teams came out of the gate firing up shots, but the rim was unkind to both squads as Detroit started the game 3-of-15, while Youngstown State was 3-of-12. YSU opened the game with a three, but Detroit then took the lead with five-straight as Reynolds hit a basket and Urbanick nailed a triple.
The Penguins answered with back-to-back 3-pointers and took the lead, 9-5, at the 14:11 mark. Another Urbanick three cut it to just one, but a 13-3 YSU run over the next seven minutes pushed the deficit to 11, 22-11.
A three ball by Crosby trimmed it to eight, but the Penguins would go on to take a 16-point lead at the break, 35-19.
The Titan defense did its best to hold Youngstown State offense down as the Penguins were shooting under 30.0 percent for much of the first half and tallied just 13-of-38 (34.2%) from the field, but eight of those were from behind the arc.
The Titans will have a week off before their next game as the red, white and blue host Valparaiso next Thursday, Feb. 5, in a 7:00 p.m., tip at historic Calihan Hall.
