YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (2/21/2015) – Ten different Titans scored as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team concluded its three-game road trip with an 83-70 win over Youngstown State Saturday night at the Beeghly Center.
The win clinched a first-round home game on March 3 for the Titans in the Horizon League Championship.
Juwan Howard Jr., led the way with a game-high 22 points, while
Jarod Williams pitched in 16 and
Paris Bass added 11.
Detroit (13-17, 6-9 HL) made its first 12 shots of the game en route to building a 28-11 lead, before the Penguins closed the half with a 24-12 run to trim the Titans lead to 40-35 during intermission. Detroit shot 80 percent (16-of-20) in the first half. Howard led all scorers with 13 points, while Williams had seven.
Youngstown State (11-18, 2-12) started the second half with a 15-9 run to take its first – and only – lead of the game, before Detroit responded with an 18-2 to build a 67-52 lead with 7:21 left.
Senior guard
Brandan Kearney scored nine points during that stretch. The Penguins would trim the lead to eight, 75-67, following a 3-pointer from Shawn Amiker with 1:44 remaining. But that was as close as the score would get as Detroit closed the game with an 8-3 run, including a put back dunk from Bass to end all of the scoring.
The Titans shot a season-high 68 percent (30-of-44) overall - including 64 percent (9-of-14) from downtown – while recording 18 assists.
Detroit will conclude its regular season when the Titans host Valparaiso on Wednesday, Feb. 25 for Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET at Calihan Hall and will be televised locally on WADL TV-38 and nationally on ESPN3.
The game can also be heard on AM 1270 with the voice of the Titans
Dan Leach making the call.
