DETROIT (2/8/2015) --
Jarod Williams set a career high with 18 points and four Titans were in doubles figures, but UIC was red hot shooting all day long as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was upended, 83-73, on Sunday afternoon in Calihan Hall.

The loss drops the Titans to 11-15, 4-7 in the Horizon League, while UIC moved to 6-19, 2-8 in league play.

Juwan Howard Jr. also had 18 points, while Paris Bass and Jaleel Hogan netted 12 points apiece.

Detroit shot 53.8 percent from the field with seven 3-pointers, but the Flames were at 58.7 percent with 12 triples.

UDM led by one, 64-63, with 7:17 left when the Flames went ahead for good on the strength of a 9-0 run, resulting in a 72-64 lead with 4:04 left. A jumper by Bass trimmed it to six, but UIC then scored five in a row for its largest lead of the day, 77-66, with 1:45 on the clock.

The Titans cut it to five, 78-73, with under a minute left, but UIC made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to earn the win.

Williams also had three rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Howard Jr. added three boards. Anton Wilson handed out a team-high four assists and Chris Jenkins finished with five points and a team-best four boards.

The Titans trailed nearly the entire first period as UIC ran off the game's first five points. UDM got within two on a three from Howard Jr., to make it 7-5, but the Flames held off that small run and extended their lead to six, 12-6, at the 13:14 mark.

Detroit was then down by five, 14-9, when Brandan Kearney had a layup and Hogan connected on two free throws to cut the deficit to just one, 14-13. The Titans were down by one again, 16-15, but UIC was able to push it to six at 22-16. That is when the red, white and blue tied it up as Jenkins and Howard Jr. nailed back-to-back 3-pointers,

The Flames would not go away as they rebounded from that quick tie to open as much as a nine-point advantage, 43-34, before taking a 43-36 lead at the break.

Both teams shot well in the first half as the Titans were at 50.0 percent (13-of-26), while the Flames were 16-of-23 (69.6%), including 7-of-10 from behind the arc.

The Titans ended the first half on a basket and then reeled off six-straight points to start the second to pull within one, 43-42.  Bass began that spurt with a layup. Williams followed with a layup of his own and then Bass knocked in two free throws.

The Flames would hold off that charge and get a three-point lead back at 49-46 with 16:09 left when Bass and Williams put the Titans ahead, 50-49, with two-straight baskets. From there, the lead would change hands two more times before Hogan's old fashioned three-point play with 11:14 gave UDM a 59-58 lead. Two minutes later, an acrobatic layup by Williams gave Detroit a three-point lead and on the next possession, Williams was able to get inside again for another basket to make it a five-point advantage, 63-58.

UIC would just not go away as it scored five straight to tie things up, but UDM jumped back in front, 64-63, off a Jenkins free throw with 7:27 remaining.

Detroit will return to action this weekend as the Titans host first-place Cleveland State on Friday, Feb. 13, in a game that will be televised nationally with an 8:00 p.m., tip on ESPNU. The Titans will then head to Oakland on Sunday for a Metro Series match-up with the Golden Grizzlies.
