YOUNGSTOWN STATE, Ohio (3/11/2015) -- Three Titans scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as the fifth-seeded University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team dropped a 73-55 road contest at fifth-seeded Youngstown State on Wednesday in the Horizon League Championship Quarterfinals.
Detroit finished the 2014-15 campaign at 12-18 overall and 7-9 in the Horizon League, where the Titans rose from being picked last in the preseason poll to capturing fifth place.
Redshirt sophomore
Rosanna Reynolds led Detroit with 18 points and six assists. Freshman
Darianne Seward tallied 17 points, five rebounds, a season-high five steals and three assists, while sophomore
Haleigh Ristovski had 11 points and five boards.
Both teams came out shooting to start the contest and it was 6-6 just four minutes in. The Penguins then notched 10-straight points to open a 16-6 advantage at the 12:34 mark. YSU was doing it from long range as four of their first five field goals were 3-pointers.
Detroit trailed by 10, 21-11, with 9:02 on the clock when the red, white and blue scored five-straight points, all from Ristovski who had a layup and then hit a trey to cut it to 21-16.
The Penguins would stall that charge and regain a 10-point cushion, 27-17, with 3:06 remaining. Reynolds and Seward then had back-to-back layups to pull UDM within six, 27-21, and the Titans went into the half down by eight, 29-21.
Detroit was 9-of-31 from the field (29.0%) and 2-of-8 from three in the first stanza, while YSU shot just 10-of-29 (34.5%), but was 5-of-14 from three.
Reynolds hit the opening layup in the second half to make it a six-point again, 29-23, but the Penguins answered with six straight to take a 12-point lead, 35-23, with 18:58 left. The Titans got it under double digits a couple of times, but YSU upped its advantage to 13, 43-30, with less than 15 minutes left.
The Titans fought back as they have all year to get within six, 47-41, with 8:19 on the clock. Seward started it with a layup and then Reynolds hit two free throws. Seward then had a steal and went to the rim for another basket and Detroit was right back in the game.
That was as close as the red, white and blue would get as free throws at the end pushed the deficit all the way to 19.
Detroit shot 43.3 percent in the second half, but YSU countered at 44.0 percent.
Freshman
Brianne Cohen had four points and senior
Ellisha Crosby and freshman
Chea Taylor added two apiece. Junior
Lariah Stevens collected two rebounds and a steal and senior
Brie Wilcox grabbed a carom.
Game Notes:Detroit still leads the overall series, 20-17… This was just the second career meeting in the postseason between the two squads as the 10th-seeded Titans lost to the seventh-seeded Penguins in the HL first round in 2008… 12 of Ristovski's 72 career 3-pointers have come against Youngstown State, including 10 at the Beeghly Center… Reynolds was held without a 3-pointer for just the fourth time all season, but she still ended the year with 59 triples for eighth in school history… Reynolds had her ninth career game with five or more assists… Seward scored in double digits for the 21st time as a rookie… Crosby ends her two-year playing career at Detroit with 517 points, 220 rebounds and 90 assists in 36 games… Wilcox ends her four-year collegiate career with 64 points, 73 rebounds and 14 assists in 50 games…
