Men's Basketball Season Ends With Quarterfinal Loss to Cleveland State

VALPARAISO, Ind. (3/6/2015) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball season came to an end following a 70-53 loss to No. 4 seed Cleveland State in the quarterfinal of the Horizon League Championship.

The Vikings (18-13) took a 31-21 lead into halftime, before Detroit (15-18) scored the first three points of the second stanza to trim the lead to 31-24 with 18:32 left. But that was as close as the score would get as CSU used a 24-6 run over the next seven minutes to build its largest lead of the game 55-30 with 11:22 remaining.

The Titans would trim the lead back to 15, 61-46 with 5:44 left, before the Vikings closed the game with 9-4 run, until Juwan Howard Jr., made his only basket of the game and last as a Titan as time expired to make the final 70-53.

Sophomore Chris Jenkins led Detroit with 14 points, while his classmate Jarod Williams added 12 and Horizon League Freshman of the Year Paris Bass pitched in 10.

Charlie Lee scored a game-high 17 to lead CSU, while Trey Lewis added 16.

Cleveland State finished shooting 51 percent overall (25-of-49), including 60 percent (9-of-15) from downtown, while Detroit was held to just 40 percent overall (21-of-52) and 21 percent (5-of-23) from deep. The Titans also turned the ball over 17 times – 14 in the first half – while only dishing out seven assists.
