JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (4/2/2015) -- Senior goalkeeper
Lexie McCormick made 14 total saves and the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse tallied five second-half goals on Thursday, but the Titans dropped their first Atlantic Sun game of the season in an 18-7 loss at Jacksonville.
Detroit (5-6 overall, 2-1 A-Sun) opened the second half strong by scoring three of the first four goals in the half. Trailing 9-2 at the break, sophomore
Kelsi Pritchard tallied her second goal of the game off a free position goal at the 28:07 mark. Senior
Tessa Keuler followed just more than two minutes later with a goal to pull the Titans to within five, 9-4, and force the Dolphins (11-2, 3-0 A-Sun) into a timeout.
After a Jacksonville goal, the Titans answered as junior
Michaela Schwartz scored her first marker of the game at the 20:16 mark to again pull Detroit to within five goals, 10-5. The Dolphins answered with four straight goals in a span of 2:28 to go up 14-5 with 16:42 left in the contest.
Junior
Kylie Birney tallied a goal at the 15:10 mark of the second half and Schwartz scored her second later in the half. Senior
Annie Mendoza added a first-half marker for the Titans to round out the scoring.
Freshman
Jessica Snyder led the Titans with two draw controls, while junior defender
Ally Shrader had a team-high four ground balls. Pritchard and McCormick each finished with three ground balls for the Titans.
McCormick reached the 100-save plateau for the fourth-straight season and made 13 saves in the first-half alone. It was the sixth game this season that McCormick has made at least 13 saves. She also reached the 600-save milestone for her career. After her effort against the Dolphins, she has 611 career saves, which is the most saves by any active goalkeeper in Division I. Sophomore
Julia Darroch played the final 10 minutes of the game, making two saves for Detroit.
Detroit finished the game 13-for-20 on clears and was efficient on free position chances, scoring on four its five free-position shots.
The Titans will look to rebound in their second game in three days on Saturday, visiting Stetson for a 12 p.m. ET contest.
