JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (4/29/2015) --
Senior Annie Mendoza scored a season-high four goals and tallied five points overall to help lead the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team to a 12-7 victory over No. 6 seed Stetson in an Atlantic Sun Quarterfinal game on Wednesday at D.B. Milne Field.

With the win, the No. 3 seed Titans (9-7) set a school record for wins in a season with nine. Detroit also advances to its third straight Atlantic Sun Semifinal game. The Titans improved to 3-2 all-time in A-Sun postseason play.

Detroit led 4-3 at halftime, but used a 7-1 spurt early in the second half to take a commanding 11-4 lead over the Hatters. The Titans scored six straight goals at one point to earn a seven-goal advantage to help earn the win. It was the second-straight game that the Titans have held a team to seven goals, as Detroit allowed just seven goals against Furman in the regular season finale.

Junior Kylie Birney added three goals and senior Tessa Keuler and junior Michaela Schwartz each scored two goals for the Titans. Freshman Jessica Snyder had one goal and one assist for Detroit.

Senior goalkeeper Lexie McCormick made nine saves in net for the Titans. Birney led Detroit with four draw controls. Senior defender Amanda Guthrie had four ground balls, while freshman Lauren Webley and Mendoza each had two caused turnovers for UDM.

The Titans wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard first. Schwartz scored just 51 seconds into the contest to give Detroit a 1-0 lead. Stetson tied the game up six minutes later with a goal, but Mendoza came back by scoring two straight for Detroit within a 1:16 span midway through the half.

Stetson (4-13) answered with consecutive goals to tie the game 3-3 with 6:26 left in the opening 30 minutes. Birney scored her first goal with 1:11 left in the half to give Detroit a 4-3 lead at the break. Detroit had the edge in shots (18-11) and ground balls (10-3) in the first half, while both teams collected four draw controls. McCormick made five saves in the first half.

The Titans came out firing in the second half, scoring seven of the first eight goals to take a commanding 11-4 lead. Schwartz opened the second half like the first, scoring quickly to make it 5-3 just 1:04 into the second half. After Stetson's Jill Chiachetti cut the UDM lead to 5-4 just one minute later, Detroit proceeded to score the next six goals.

Mendoza scored a man-up goal and Snyder followed with her first postseason goal off a feed from Mendoza. Keuler then got on the board with a goal before Mendoza tallied her fourth of the game. Keuler and Birney scored the final two goals in the stretch, forcing Stetson into a timeout.

The Hatters scored three straight in the late stages of the game, but Birney notched her team-leading 35th goal of the season with 2:12 remaining to help put an exclamation point on the win. The hat trick for Birney was her seventh of the year.

The Titans finished the game with a 33-20 shot advantage. Detroit also had 19 ground balls, while Stetson finished with 10. The UDM defense helped force the Hatters into 14 turnovers.

Detroit, the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Sun Championships, advances to face No. 2 seed Old Dominion in the A-Sun Semifinals on Friday. The game is set for 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ESPN3.com. It's the second of two semifinal games that day. Admission into the contest is $5.
