JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (5/3/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team gave top-seeded Jacksonville University everything it could handle, but the Titans fell in the Atlantic Sun Championship game, 15-5, on Sunday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field.
The Titans (10-8) held the Dolphins to their lowest goal total in the first half in A-Sun history and trailed 5-3 at the break, but Detroit ultimately fell in its third-straight A-Sun title game. Detroit and Jacksonville have faced each other in all three Atlantic Sun Championship games.
Seniors
Annie Mendoza,
Taylor Marshall, and
Lexie McCormick were each named to the Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the game.
Mendoza scored three goals for her third-straight hat trick in the postseason and finished the A-Sun Championships with a tournament-high 11 goals. Senior
Tessa Keuler added one goal and one assist, while junior
Michaela Schwartz added a goal for the Titans. Junior
Kylie Birney finished the game with team-highs of three ground balls and two draw controls.
McCormick was strong all day in net for the Titans, making 13 saves in between the pipes for her ninth 10-save game of the year. She finished the tournament with 30 saves overall and set a new championship game record with her 13 stops in net. McCormick also finished the season with her best goals against average and save percentage of her career.
Jacksonville scored the first two goals of the game in the first 1:40 of the contest. Mendoza led Detroit right back scoring the next two goals to tie the game at 2-2. After the Dolphins took a 3-2 lead, Schwartz scored with 9:22 left in the first half of a free position shot.
The Detroit defense stood tall in allowing just three goals in the final 28 minutes of the first half. Jacksonville led 5-3 at the break, but Mendoza completed the hat trick, scoring the first goal of the second half just 49 seconds after halftime off a feed from Keuler to bring the Titans within one, 5-4.
Keuler would add a goal just a few minutes later to pull the Titans to within two, 7-5, but that was as close as Detroit would get the rest of the game. Keuler, who shattered the single-season assists record and finished with 33 helpers this season, also concluded her season with 63 points, the sixth-best total in school history.
The Titans finished the first half 7-of-10 on clears and finished the game 12-of-18. Jacksonville was 11-of-12 for the game. Detroit had the edge in free position shots for the contest, 9-8. The Titans had 13 turnovers, while forcing the Dolphins into nine turnovers.
Detroit set a school-record for victories in a season with 10 and finished above .500 for the first time in team history. The Titans finished the year with their third-most goals (219) in school history and had the best goals against average (11.89) in program history.
The Titans lose six seniors -- all starters -- from their 2015 squad.
