DETROIT (8/30/2015) --
The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team played in its second-straight overtime match Sunday afternoon, but despite out-shooting Marshall 15-8 in the contest, Detroit fell the the Thundering Herd in the first extra frame, 1-0, at Titan Field. It was Detroit's second game in three days after opening with a tie against IUPUI in the 2015 opener on Friday.

The Titans dropped to 0-1-1 through the first two games of the season.

Detroit had a great chance early in the match as senior defender Jacob Prud'homme (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) received a cross in the box, but his shot sailed high of the goal just 2:11 in to the contest. Neither team could find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of the game. The Titans had the edge in shots in the first half, 6-4.

The Titans came out firing in the second half, putting three shots on goal in the first 11 minutes of the second frame. Senior defender Austin Dunn (Perry, Mich. / Perry), making his UDM debut, fired a curling shot on net just eight minutes into the second half that was turned away by Marshall goalkeeper Dominik Reining, who had to dive to make the save.

Junior Tommy Bowman (Beverly Hills, Mich. / Seaholm) had another great look just minutes later taking a free kick from just outside the box. His shot cleared the wall and was heading for the corner of the goal, but Reining again turned away the chance.

Bowman had two more shots on goal in the final minutes of regulation, the first coming on a breakaway down the right side of the field. He entered the box with the ball, but his shot was turned away by a hard-charging Reining. Bowman had three shots in the final 10 minutes of regulation.

In overtime, sophomore forward Don Nakashima (Novi, Mich. / Novi) had Detroit's only shot, but he pushed his chance just wide. Minutes later, Marshall earned a free kick just outside of the box and capitalized, scoring the golden goal. Marshall's Jack Hopkins pushed a free kick to the far side of the box and the ball was headed in by Chris Mar Taibi to end the game.

Bowman finished the game with career-highs of six total shots and four shots on goal. Prud'homme and sophomore forward Spiro Pliakos (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) each finished with two shots and one shot on goal. Senior goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) played the entire game in net, making three saves for Detroit.

It was the first meeting between the two schools in men's soccer. Bowman matched his 2014 season total in shots -- six -- during the contest.

Detroit hits the road for the next five games and heads to Florida next for two games in three days in the Sunshine state. The Titans play Stetson on Friday, Sept. 4 for a 7 p.m. match before visiting Jacksonville on Sunday, Sept. 6.
