Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Titans Score Three Unanswered to Down BGSU, 3-1

DETROIT (9/2/15) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team got off to a slow start, but rallied for three unanswered goals to defeat Bowling Green State University, 3-1, on a scorching afternoon from Titan Field on Wednesday.

With the win, Detroit improves to 2-2 on the season, while Bowling Green drops to 2-2.

The visitors struck first with an early goal in the fourth minute, as Mikaela Couch redirected a feed from Skylar Fleak past the outstretched arms of the Titan keeper, Marina Manzo.

The Falcons carried play for much of the first half, outshooting the Titans 8-1 through the first 40 minutes.

A buildup of Titan momentum produced a seemingly harmless 35-yard free kick for Detroit in the 42nd minute, but Tatum Zurawski smashed a curving ball through traffic and past an unsuspecting Falcon goalkeeper to knot the game at 1-1.

With seconds remaining before halftime, Phylisha Drayton snuck through a pair of defenders and nearly netted the go-ahead goal, but her ball caromed off the top post.

The Titans came out of the break organized and riding momentum from the first frame, putting pressure on the Falcon defense with a pair of shots in the early going.

The Detroit midfield strung a series of passes together to spring Carley Rice and Sara Zawacki out on a fast break in the 60th minute. Zawacki carried the ball down the right flank and found Rice streaking down the opposite side of the box. Rice gathered the pass and beat the keeper for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

Drayton capped the scoring after dribbling down the right side and finessing a shot into the top of the net, giving Detroit the 3-1 advantage in the 73rd minute.

Drayton's goal was the first of her career, while Zurawski's goal was her first since 2013 and the second of her career. Rice and Zawacki each picked up their first goal and assist, respectively, of the young season.

Detroit finished the match with the edge in total shots (11-10), while the teams each received four corner kicks. After being outshot, 8-1, in the opening 40 minutes, the Titans outshot the visitors 10-2 over the final 50 minutes of action.

Manzo picked up her second win of the season to improve to 2-1, making five saves while allowing the lone goal.

Lauren Cadel was tagged with the loss to fall to 2-2, allowing three goals with a pair of saves.

Up next, Detroit turns its attention to a road trip on the west coast. The Titans travel to Loyola Marymount on Friday for a 10 p.m. start, before heading to Cal State Northridge on Sunday for a 4 p.m. start.
