DETROIT (1/16/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team rallied from 13 points down on Saturday and hit some clutch shots in the final minutes of the game to earn a 66-65 victory over visiting Northern Kentucky at Calihan Hall.
Detroit improved to 4-2 in the Horizon League and 8-9 overall.
The Titans opened the final quarter trailing by nine points, 57-48, but went on a 9-0 run to knot the game, 57-57, with 5:27 left. Junior
Rosanna Reynolds (Canton, Mich. / Divine Child) opened the run with a jumper and
Nicole Urbanick followed with a 3-pointer off a feed from Reynolds.
Sophomore
Brianne Cohen (Toronto, Ont. / York Memorial) had a lay-up and then a block on the defensive end. Minutes later Reynolds corralled an offensive rebound and the put-back tied the game, 57-57.
Detroit went up 63-61 on a corner 3-pointer by
Lola Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich. / University Liggett) with 1:08 remaining.
Northern Kentucky tied the contest and then took the lead, 65-63, with 17 seconds left. Urbanick followed by knocking down her fourth triple of the game off an assist by Reynolds to give Detroit the lead for good, 66-65, with 9.9 seconds remaining.
The Norse had two chances with under 5 seconds left, but
Lola Ristovski had a block on the first attempt and the second tip-in shot with 0.2 seconds left was ruled to be released after the final buzzer. Detroit held NKU to just 10 points in the final 10 minutes in the victory.
Reynolds had a game-high 18 points, tying Mary Lillie for 19th all-time on the scoring list. Urbanick added 14 points, 13 of them in the second half.
Lola Ristovski had six points on two 3-pointers and a career-high seven assists against no turnovers.
Haleigh Ristovski added eight points and eight rebounds, while freshman
Brittney Jackson (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Nazareth) scored eight points for the Titans.
The Titans led 20-15 after one quarter, but Northern Kentucky rallied for a 38-31 lead at halftime. Reynolds had 10 points and four rebounds at the break, while Jackson hit two 3-pointers and scored eight points in the opening 20 minutes.
Detroit shot 10-of-26 from beyond the arc and hit 41.1 percent of shots overall. Northern Kentucky hit all nine free throws, while Detroit was 10-of-15 from the free throw line. The Titans held the edge in rebounds, 37-36.
