DETROIT (10/15/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team defeated Cleveland State, 1-0, on Senior Day in Horizon League action from Titan Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Titans controlled play throughout the match, but it took until the 81
st minute to break the scoreless affair as junior
Rachel DeLuca swept in the Titans' 14
th corner kick of the day to the head of classmate
Phylisha Drayton for what would be the game-winner.
With the win, the Titans improve to 8-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 in conference action. The result also marks Detroit Mercy's sixth win in the last seven games.
The Titans finished the match with a dominant 14-1 advantage in corner kicks, including a 10-0 edge in the first half alone. The team also held a 10-6 lead in total shots, including a 4-2 advantage in shots on net.
Junior goalkeeper
Marina Manzo led a strong defensive effort and secured her third shutout of the season after making a pair of saves.
The Titans had pressure on the Viking defense all afternoon and had a pair of great chances late in the first half. The first came in the 36
th minute as sophomore
Molly Kane headed a corner towards net, but a sprawling save kept the game scoreless. The next chance came just moments later as Drayton broke into the open field and ripped a shot just wide of goal.
DeLuca nearly had three points on the day after earning a free kick in the 73
rd minute and curling a shot through the defensive wall that caught the post. She would finish the match with two shots and the crucial assist on the corner kick delivery to Drayton.
Drayton led the squad with three shots in the match, including the game-winning goal.
