Titans Earn 1-1 Road Draw at NKU

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (10/22/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw on the road at Northern Kentucky on a cold afternoon of Horizon League action from NKU Soccer Stadium in the Bluegrass State.

The Norse struck first with a goal in the 29th minute as Shawna Zaken scored on a cross from Macy Hamblin to take the early 1-0 lead, but the Titans would not back away.

Junior Suzie Redick scored the equalizer in the 36th minute after collecting a cross from senior Kristen Tobin and chipping in the goal from the left side.

The Titans outshot the host Norse 10-4 in the opening frame and came on strong after conceding the opening goal. NKU followed with a strong second half in a battle featuring two of the top Horizon League squads.

The teams remained knotted as the match headed to overtime, but the game would end in a 1-1 tie as neither team could find the golden goal. Senior Mary LeAnnais had the best opportunity off a Rachel DeLuca free kick, but her header attempt missed just over the bar.

At the end of the day, NKU held the edge in total shots 16-15 and corner kicks 11-5, while the Titans posted a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Redick tallied the lone goal for Detroit Mercy, with the assist to Tobin. DeLuca, Phylisha Drayton and Carley Rice each tallied three shots to cap the top offensive performers for the Titans.

Junior Marina Manzo held one of the league's top scoring offenses to just one goal in 110 minutes while making four saves.

With the draw, Detroit Mercy moves to 5-1-2 in league play and remains in second place of the conference standings. Meanwhile, NKU moves to 5-1-1 with two games remaining. The Titans close out the regular season at UIC, while the Norse face Wright State and Valparaiso.

The Titans are now unbeaten in their last four at 3-0-1 and improve to 7-1-2 in the last 10 matches.

Detroit Mercy returns to action next Friday in the regular season finale at UIC. Game time is set for 8 p.m. EST in the Windy City.
