DETROIT (10/4/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team fired a season-high 16 shots in Tuesday's non-conference match with Fort Wayne, but the Titans suffered a 3-0 setback against the visiting Mastodons.
The Titans have several good scoring opportunities in the match, hitting a crossbar, post and just barely missing the goal several other times. Senior midfielder
Tommy Bowman led Detroit Mercy with five shots in the contest.
The teams played to a scoreless first half with each side planting two shots on goal. Bowman had an early look for the Titans that was saved and later in the half pushed a cross just wide right of the net.
Sophomore keeper
Josh Flamme was strong in net in the first half, making a point blank save and turning away two shots overall. He made three saves and played all 90 minutes in his first career start of the Titans.
Fort Wayne got on the scoreboard in the 59th minute on a shot from the left side of the box by Zach Tom. Just minutes later, the Mastodons again found the back of the net on a corner kick. Fort Wayne would go on the score another marker in the 76th minute.
Detroit Mercy had several great opportunities in the second half with
Matt Harkema hitting the post and a follow-up header by Bowman being pushed wide. Earlier in the second half a shot from freshman
Jake Reitzloff went past the goalkeeper but was blocked away by a defender.
Late in the game, freshman
Aleks Vushaj hit a shot off the crossbar, with the ball going straight down but not crossing the goal line. Classmate
Nick Toupin's shot just seconds later was also saved by a defender with the goalkeeper out of position.
The Titans did lead Fort Wayne in the shot column during the match, 16-13. Both teams had four corner kicks on the day. Detroit Mercy was issued the only card of the game, while the Titans had an 11-9 lead in fouls.
Vushaj and
Jonathan Bohlman each had two shots in the match.
Detroit Mercy raised more than $100 through its annual Pink Game. The proceeds went towards the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.
