DETROIT (11/30/16) – Freshman
Corey Allen set a season-high with 20 points as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was upended by Eastern Michigan, 87-61, on Wednesday night from historic Calihan Hall.
Allen poured in 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while connecting on 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc to lead the Titan attack.
Junior
Jaleel Hogan nearly netted a double-double before fouling out with 11 points and team-high nine rebounds going 5-of-8 from the floor. Hogan added a career-high three blocks while patrolling the paint.
Seven other Titans scored in the contest, led by senior
Chris Jenkins' nine points and eight rebounds. Newcomer
Malik Eichler played 14 minutes off the bench and scored a season-high seven points with an efficient 2-for-3 mark from the field and 3-for-3 clip from the charity stripe to round out the top performers for the red, white and blue.
After a tight opening frame, the visiting Eagles broke the game open early in the second half. Coming out of the break, Eastern Michigan shot 8-for-12 from the field and nailed 4-of-5 triples, while forcing six Titan turnovers, during a 20-4 run that gave the visitors a 59-39 lead with 13:46 left on the clock.
The first half was a different story, with the Titans getting off to a hot start from the opening tip and beginning the game on a 12-2 run that forced a quick timeout by the Eagles' sideline. Allen drilled a pair from long range and netted eight early points as the Titans jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the opening minutes.
EMU would answer, however, with a 12-0 run to take the lead, 19-17. The squads would go back and forth through the remainder of the period as the visiting Eagles took a 39-35 lead into the break.
Allen was perfect in the opening stanza, netting 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting, including a 3-for-3 mark from downtown. Hogan added nine points and five boards, with a pair of monstrous blocks to lead Detroit Mercy in the half.
Detroit Mercy will look to bounce back on Saturday, Dec. 3, on the road at Murray State. The Titans and Racers are set to get underway at 8 p.m. (EST) from the Bluegrass State as Detroit Mercy kicks off a three-game road swing.
