TOLEDO (12/21/2016) -- Senior guard
Rosanna Reynolds became the seventh player in school history to surpass the 1,400-point plateau and went into second place on the career assist list, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team dropped its non-conference finale Wednesday night at Toledo, 72-66, from Savage Arena.
Junior
Brianne Cohen led all scorers with 17 points, while adding a team-best seven rebounds for the Titans (4-7). Freshman
Anja Marinkovic hit four 3-pointers and scored 12 points. Reynolds had 11 points and a team-high six assists, as she moved past former Titan standout Jocelyn Boyd into second place in career assists with 452.
It was a high-scoring first quarter between the two sides with the Titans shooting 50 percent in the first 10 minutes.
Anja Marinkovic sank both of 3-point attempts in the opening frame, and Detroit Mercy led 19-15 after
Brianne Cohen's spinning post move that resulted in an easy layup. The teams combined for 38 first-quarter points, 19 by each side.
Both teams struggled to find their scoring rhythm early in the second quarter, but sophomore
Gracie Roberts connected on a pair of shots before the media timeout in the frame as the Titans were down just one, 26-25, with 4:32 to go in the second stanza. Sophomore forward
Cortney Williams and freshman
Ashley Miller converted on back-to-back buckets later in the second, but Toledo took a 36-30 halftime lead.
Haleigh Ristovski and
Anja Marinkovic, who finished the game 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, each hit triples early in the third quarter to cut into the Toledo advantage with Ristovski's triple bringing the Titans to within two, 38-36, with 7:19 on the clock in the third quarter.
Marinkovic hit her fourth 3-pointer later in the quarter to again cut the Toledo lead to two points, 46-44, and
Lola Ristovski converted on a triple from the wing with seconds left in the third quarter off a feed from Reynolds. After three quarters, the Titans trailed by five, 54-49.
Toledo continued to lead in the fourth quarter, but the Titans wouldn't go away. Consecutive makes in the paint from Cohen and
Kelsey Mitchell forced the Rockets into a timeout with 7:41 left, with the score 56-53 Toledo.
The Rockets scored two-straight buckets out of the timeout to go up, 60-53. Detroit Mercy would bring it back down to five points after a Cohen layup made it 62-57 with 4:47 left, but Toledo answered with four-straight points and would lead by 10, 68-58, with 2:20 left. Toledo missed some free throws in the final minutes, but the Titans ran out of time in a comeback attempt.
The Titans had a 23-15 rebound advantage in the first half and led Toledo in the game overall, 41-37. Detroit Mercy also shot 41.8 percent from the field in the contest, the sixth time this season it has shot 40 percent or better.
Haleigh Ristovski tallied nine points, three assists and two steals, while
Lola Ristovski added six boards, a season high. All 10 players that saw time in the contest scored at least one point and had at least one rebound.
Detroit Mercy held Toledo's leading scorer Jay Bravo-Harriott to just six points in the contest. Mariella Santucci had 15 points for the Rockets (9-2).
