TOLEDO, Ohio (12/7/2016) -- Senior
Chris Jenkins tallied a double-double with a team-high 15 points and career-best 14 rebounds, but a second-half run by Toledo was the difference as the Titans fell, 73-65, on Wednesday night.
Jenkins played all 40 minutes in recording his fifth career double-double.Â
Senior
Jarod Williams had 13 points, six rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
Josh McFolley netted 14 points with four rebounds, a team-high four assists and tying his career-best with four steals, while sophomore
Gerald Blackshear Jr., had 10 points and five boards.Â
The Titans (1-8) shot 41.9-percent from the field and also outrebounded the Rockets, 43-37. The defense forced 13 Toledo (4-5) turnovers and held the home team to 40.4-percent shooting, a season best for the red, white and blue.Â
The Rockets scored the first basket in the second half to make it a one-point game, 30-29, but the Titans went on a 14-4 spurt to open up a double-digit lead. Williams began the charge with a triple and then Blackshear Jr., got inside for a layup.Â
With the Titans already up 37-33, they were able to reel off seven straight points with Williams starting it again, getting to the rim for a bucket. McFolley then added an old-fashioned three-point play and finished the run with a beautiful pass to Jenkins, who jammed it home for a 44-33 lead with 16:32 left.
Toledo trimmed that to four, 46-42, Â but back-to-back scores from junior
Jaleel Hogan and McFolley put the Titans ahead, 50-42, at the 13:49 mark.Â
From there, Toledo started to chip away and eventually took the lead with just over eight minutes remaining. The Titans were within two on a few occasions, the latest at 65-63, with 3:18 left, but the Rockets held on for the win.Â
Hogan finished with eight points and six caroms and freshman
Cole Long added four points and two rebounds off the bench.Â
The Titans came out very aggressive on both sides of the ball and used an early 10-2 run to take a 16-10 lead midway through the first half. Â Long started it with a basket and Jenkins had six-straight points after that. A bucket down low by Hogan would push the lead to six.Â
Detroit Mercy's defense held Toledo to just 4-of-14 to start the game and 6-of-17 at one point as the Titans continued to stretch their advantage. The Titans led by eight at 24-16 and 26-18 before upping their lead to nine, 30-21, off a Williams layup with 3:04 left in the first.
Toledo scored six-straight to end the stanza, but the red, white and blue led 30-27 at the break.
The defense held Toledo to just 7-of-23 from the field and 1-of-8 from behind the arc, while forcing eight turnovers in the first stanza. The Titans also had a 19-15 advantage on the boards.Â
Detroit Mercy will stay on the road in the MAC when it visits Bowling Green on Saturday, Dec. 10. Game time is set for Noon at the Stroh Center.Â
