DETROIT (3/25/2016) -- Behind a strong defensive effort highlighted by 12 saves from freshman
Allison McDonough, the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team matched a school-record with its fourth consecutive victory Friday in a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Robert Morris.
Detroit (4-4) trailed 3-2 at halftime from Titan Field, but scored three straight goals to begin the second half to flip the advantage for the game. McDonough was strong in net all day -- making six saves in each half -- and came up with several clutch stops late in the contest.
The Titans opened the second half with two goals in the first six minutes of the stanza. Detroit's first in the second half came off a free-position goal by senior
Kylie Birney, her 97th career marker, before freshman
Lexie Kinmond gave the Titans the lead, 4-3, just minutes later with her first goal of the game off a feed from sophomore
Kelsi Pritchard.
Neither team scored for the next 13 minutes of the second half, as McDonough came up with save after save. She made four saves in that span to preserve the lead for the Titans.
Kinmond gave the Titans a two-goal cushion with her second marker of the game on a free-position shot at the 11:47 mark. Robert Morris' Dana Davis scored with 3:21 left to pull RMU to within one goal, but Detroit controlled the final minutes of the game, as freshman
Morgan Girardi caused a turnover after Robert Morris won the ensuing draw control.
After sophomore
Lauren Webley collected the ground ball off the turnover, Detroit kept possession of the ball for the final three minutes as senior
Ally Shrader and company played keep away in the offensive zone.
The win was the first for Detroit over Robert Morris in four career tries against the Colonials. The last three contests, including Friday's, have come down to two goals or fewer. Detroit's fourth-straight triumph this season also tied the school record, set by the 2012 Detroit squad.
Kinmond led the offense with two goals and one assist. Girardi and freshman
Kaitlyn Wandelt also scored goals in the first half for Detroit. Birney finished with a team-high five ground balls, while Shrader, Wandelt and McDonough all finished with four ground balls. Wandelt had a team-best four caused turnovers with Birney, Webley and sophomore
Taylor Spray each chipping in two caused turnovers.
McDonough reached the 10-save plateau for the third time this season, making a season-best 12 stops. Her save percentage for the game of 75 percent was also a season-best.
Robert Morris held the advantage in draw controls for the game, 10-1, but Detroit made 12 saves against just one for the Colonials. Detroit's 12 caused turnovers tied a season-high, while the Titans helped force RMU into 22 miscues, which was a season-high for an opponent.
The victory marked the lowest-scoring game in school history as the two teams combined for nine goals. Detroit's eight goals given up in a three-game span is also the fewest in school history. In its four-game win streak, Detroit is out-scoring its opponents 60-18.
