MACON, Ga. (4/22/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team scored 10 first-half goals and never relinquished an early lead to earn an Atlantic Sun road victory Friday, 14-11, over host Mercer. With the win, the Titans improved to 3-2 in the Atlantic Sun.
Freshman attack
Lexie Kinmond tallied a career-best seven points -- all in the first half -- for the Titans. Freshman midfielder
Kaitlyn Wandelt scored four goals and reached the 40-goal plateau for Detroit which improved to 8-6 overall and tied for the second-most wins in single-season history.
Senior
Kylie Birney and junior
Kelsi Pritchard each added two goals for Detroit.
The game was tied 2-2 early in the first half before Detroit went on a 5-1 run to take a 7-3 lead over Mercer. Birney scored her 20th goal of the season to open the stretch before Kinmond found the back of the net just over a minute later.
After a Mercer goal, Wandelt scored two-straight markers and Pritchard finished off the run with a goal on Kinmond's third assist of the first half. Pritchard would add another goal just minutes later and Kinmond found the back of the net two more times before the half of the break to account for all seven of her points. She became the second Titan to reach 30 goals this season behind Wandelt.
Detroit led at halftime, 10-6, behind 23 shots in the first half and a 13-4 edge in draw controls.
Mercer scored three of the first four goals in the second half to cut the Detroit lead to 11-9, but the Titans countered with two goals in a span of 37 seconds as freshman
Morgan Girardi notched a goal before Wandelt scored her fourth of the game to push UDM back up four goals, 13-9, with 14:18 left.
The Titan defense then took over, holding the Bears to just two goals in the final 16 minutes of the contest. Birney added her 21st goal of the season with 5:50 remaining on the clock to help cushion the Titans' lead. Freshman goalkeeper
Allison McDonough stood tall in net once again, making 10 saves to earn the victory.
Sophomore defender
Emma Mucci had a terrific day in the draw circle, collecting a career-high eight draw controls, the second-most in single-game school history. Mucci helped lead the Detroit dominance in draw controls as the Titans doubled up Mercer, 18-9, for the game.
Detroit finished 4-of-11 on free position chances and edged Mercer in total shots, 33-32. The Titans also had just 11 total turnovers in the game.Â
