DETROIT (4/29/2016) -- Detroit rallied in each half in Friday afternoon's pivotal contest with Old Dominion, but it was enough against the visiting Monarchs as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse fell 17-12 from Titan Field.
The Titans fall to 9-7 and 4-3 in Atlantic Sun play. With the loss, Detroit is tied for fourth place in the Atlantic Sun with Mercer and would earn the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Championships with a Mercer loss to Furman or a win on Sunday over Howard.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Wandelt tied a career-high on Friday with seven points on four goals and three assists. Wandelt scored goal No. 50 on the season during the game, becoming the first Titan to reach that plateau since 2012. Detroit also collected a season-high 20 draw controls, including a 14-3 margin in the second half.
Old Dominion started the game on a 6-0 run, before the Titans rallied with a run of their own to tighten the score at the half. Wandelt kicked off the Detroit scoring at the 12:44 mark of the first half, before classmate
Morgan Girardi followed with two of her own. Junior
Kelsi Pritchard followed off an assist from Wandelt before Wandelt scored Detroit's fifth-straight goal to bring the Titans to within one goal, 6-5, with 5:09 left in the opening half.
Wandelt had four points at the break as Detroit trailed, 8-5. Old Dominion tallied the first two markers of the second half, before Detroit scored seven of the next 10 goals. Detroit trailed 13-7, before the Titans scored four-straight goals, started off by a pair of markers from freshman
Lexie Kinmond, her 32nd and 33rd goals of the season. Pritchard and Wandelt followed with goals just 1:01 apart as Detroit pulled to within two, 13-11, with 8:54 left.
The Monarchs (13-3, 6-1 A-Sun) pulled away down the stretch to earn the victory.
Detroit had five players with multiple-goal games, led by Wandelt's four goals. Girardi, Kinmond, sophomore
Brianna Plester and Pritchard all each added two goals for the Titans.
The Titans were strong in the draw circle against Old Dominion, holding a 14-3 advantage in the second half and out-drawing the Monarchs overall for the contest, 20-11. Sophomore
Emma Mucci had seven draw controls for Detroit, while Wandelt corralled six draw controls.
Senior
Kylie Birney led the team with two caused turnovers, while senior
Ally Shrader, Wandelt and sophomore
Lauren Webley all each had three ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper
Allison McDonough made seven stops in goal for the Titans.
Wandelt was 2-for-2 on free-position goals as Detroit went 5-for-8 on free-position chances. Detroit was out-shot in the game, 31-21. The Titans forced ODU into 18 turnovers, but also committed 25, which was the second most this season.
