DETROIT (9/21/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team powered past Madonna University, 2-0, on a sunny Wednesday afternoon from Titan Field.
The Titans peppered 20 shots and controlled possession throughout the match on the way to victory.
The tilt looked to be heading to halftime scoreless until senior
Anna Mindling forced a turnover up the left sideline and beat a defender one-on-one to get a clean look at goal. The keeper made a terrific initial save, but junior
Phylisha Drayton broke in on goal to collect the rebound and slam it into the back of the net with just 17 seconds left in the half.
Detroit Mercy continued to carry the lead through the second half and added an insurance goal as senior
Carley Rice found Mindling for a sliding goal on a cross into the box from the left wing.
The Crusader offense was limited by a strong defensive effort from the Titans, mustering only five shots in the match. Two of Madonna's shots came on net, but junior
Marina Manzo was up to the task and made two saves.
Drayton tallied a team-high five shots in the victory and collected her second goal of the season, while Mindling's 80
th minute marker was her sixth goal of her senior year campaign. Rice's assist is her team-best third of the season.
Manzo picks up her second shutout of the season and improves to 3-5-1 in net on the year.
The Titans held the advantage in total shots (20-5), shots on goal (6-2) and corner kicks (12-1).
The win extends Detroit Mercy's current unbeaten streak to three games and also keeps the Titans unbeaten against Madonna in eight tries all-time.
The Titans return to Horizon League action Saturday at Valparaiso. The tilt is set to begin at 8 p.m. EST and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
