ELON, N.C. (8/4/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team put together another strong effort on the road Sunday night, closing out play at the Elon/High Point Classic with a 1-0 defeat to host Elon at Rudd Field. The Titans allowed just two goals during the tournament, finishing in third place overall.
Elon (3-1-0) scored the lone goal of the game in the first five minutes of the contest and made that goal stick in capturing the victory. Detroit Mercy had its chances, the first off a corner kick late in the first half when freshman
Justin Murray's header glanced off the crossbar in the 42nd minute.
The Titans' had a better opportunity in the second half when they were awarded a penalty kick after
Spiro Pliakos was fouled in the box, but junior
Adam Clauss pushed his shot just left of the goal.
Detroit Mercy amped up its offensive pressure late in the game, pushing everyone forward, but couldn't get a shot on net. The Titans finished with three shots and two corner kicks in the contest.
It was the third game this season in which the Titans have allowed no more than one goal. Junior goalkeeper
Robbie Beckwell made two saves and finished with 10 stops total in the tournament. Junior
Ryan Ruloff, Clauss and Murray each had a shot for the Titans.
Following the conclusion of the tournament,
Spiro Pliakos and
Justin Murray were each named to the All-Tournament Team of the Elon/High Point Classic.

Detroit Mercy closes out its five-game road trip to begin the season next weekend, visiting Valparaiso on Saturday, Sept. 10, for a 3 p.m. ET contest in Indiana. The match is the opening of the Horizon League season for both teams.
