Titans Fall In Overtime Thriller

DETROIT (1/27/2017) -- The highest scoring freshman in the Horizon League Corey Allen led the Titans with 22 points, but it was not enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker in overtime, 73-69, to Milwaukee on Friday night.

Allen – who came into the game averaging 12.5 points per game, good for 14th in the Horizon League – also tied his season high with five rebounds and dished out two assists.

Junior Jaleel Hogan posted a double-double with 15 points and a career-tying 11 rebounds, while senior Jarod Williams netted 13 points and tied for the team lead with a career-best 11 boards.

Neither Detroit Mercy (4-17, 2-7 HL) nor Milwaukee (8-14, 4-5 HL) ever led by double digits in the contest, which featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes.

The Titans were down by six, 45-39, with 13:22 left in the second half when they climbed all the way back with a 10-2 run. The Titans hit 4-of-5 shots in that span and held Milwaukee to 0-of-4 shooting as they took the lead with a three by Allen and then Hogan slamming it down to make it 49-47 with 9:54 remaining.

After a basket by the Panthers, a jumper from Hogan and a triple off the hands of junior DeShawndre Black had the red, white and blue up by five, 56-51, with 6:03 left.

The Panthers eventually came back to even it at 58-58 at the 2:11 mark, but a basket by Williams pushed the Titans back in front, 60-58, with under two minutes on the clock. Neither team would score for the next minute as Milwaukee split a pair of free throws, but then they took the lead, 61-60, with 10 seconds left. The Titans took possession and it looked like they were not going to be able to get the game-winning shot, but a foul was called with 1.1 left and Allen hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to send the game into the extra session.

Senior Patrick Robinson Jr. hit a trey to begin overtime for a three-point advantage, 64-61, and later on, Allen stroked in a trifecta to give the Titans a 67-65 lead with 2:43 left. The game was tied again at 67-67 and 69-69 with under a minute remaining, but Milwaukee was able to pull away for the win.

Robinson Jr. and sophomore Josh McFolley finished with six points and a team-high three assists apiece.

Detroit Mercy shot 44.1 percent for the game with eight 3-pointers and a season-low seven turnovers.

The Titans will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 29, when the red, white and blue host Green Bay. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., inside historic Calihan Hall.

Game Notes:
Titan head coach Bacari Alexander '99 and Milwaukee head coach LaVall Jordan were assistants at Michigan for six seasons (2010-2016) and were MCC rivals as Jordan played at Butler in the late 90's… It was the Titans second doubleheader of the year as they played a double overtime game against Manhattan at home earlier in the season… The Titans were 126-of-171 (73.6%) at the free-throw line in the last nine games… Detroit Mercy has now used nine different starting lineups this season… Chris Jenkins missed the game with an undisclosed injury as he was the only Titan coming into the game that had started every match-up this season… Allen was in double figures for the 12th time this season and also registered his fourth 20-point game of the year… Williams had a double-double against Adrian in the season opener… The last time two Titans recorded a double-double in a game was also against Milwaukee last season as Paris Bass (24 pts., 10 rebs.) and Carlton Brundidge (16 pts., 12 rebs.) accomplished the task…
