Women’s Soccer Edged By Green Bay

DETROIT (10/21/2017) -- The Titans outshot the Phoenix in the second half, but a first-period marker was the difference as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team fell, 1-0, on Saturday.

Detroit Mercy (4-12-1, 1-7-0 HL) saw Green Bay (3-11-1, 2-5-1 HL) knock in a goal in the seventh minute and despite a late attack – especially in the last 20 minutes – the Phoenix prevailed.

The Titans and Phoenix ended with eight shots apiece and Detroit Mercy had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior Sarah Hirschmann made two saves in the second half and junior Molly Kane led the attack with three shots.

The Titans will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 27, as the red, white and blue host Wright State at 4 p.m., on Titan Field. It will be Senior Day as Detroit Mercy honors their elder class prior to the start of the contest.

First Half
  • Green Bay had a shot high at 6:15 and then 30 seconds later, the Phoenix had another look to the front of the goalie and put it in the net for a 1-0 lead.
  • Green Bay had a few more looks on net, but junior Marina Manzo came up with a save at 18:42 and the other attempts were high or wide.
  • The Titans did not register a shot in the first stanza.

Second Half
  • Detroit Mercy had its first real chance at 50:38, but freshman Kelli Doyle's header was saved.
  • Senior Rachel DeLuca had a shot that was blocked in the 61st minute that resulted in a corner kick, but that did not produce a scoring chance.
  • Hirschmann had a save at 66:14 to keep Green Bay with the one-goal lead.
  • Kane posted a shot on net in the 73rd minute, but it was just knocked away.
  • The Titans were awarded a corner at 77:13 and Kane's shot off of that was wide.
  • A couple of minutes later, junior Caitlin Carroll's attempt sailed wide.
  • Detroit Mercy had another corner kick in the 85th minute, but junior Carly Fiorido's shot was blocked by a defender and a few minutes later, Kane booted a ball that was also blocked.
  • Hirschmann stopped her second shot of the game to keep the Phoenix at bay at 88:23.

Game Notes
  • The Titans still lead the all-time series, 22-3-3, but the setback ended a six-game winning streak over the Phoenix.
  • Detroit Mercy has now dropped eight games by one goal, including six in Horizon League play.
  • Hirschmann made her second appearance of the season and third in her career.
  • Kane led the team in shots for the first time this season.
