DETROIT (10/28/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 Horizon League match to visiting Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at Titan Field.

Prior to the game, Detroit Mercy honored its eight seniors in the 2017 class with a pregame ceremony -- Dalton Amez, Robbie Beckwell, Adam Clauss, Matt DeVries, Tyler Hughes, Tyler Moorman, Spiro Pliakos and Spencer Steinwascher.

The Titans (6-7-3, 3-4-1 HL) have one game left on the regular season schedule and remain in the hunt for a Horizon League Championship postseason spot. Detroit Mercy has 10 points and is tied with Oakland for seventh place entering Saturday's remaining league matches. The red, white and blue travel to Cleveland State on Friday in a must-win situation.

Detroit Mercy posted five of the first six shots of the game in the opening 16 minutes of the match. Sophomore Aleks Vushaj had a pair of headers in the box in the first 10 minutes. Adam Clauss also had two shots in the first 15 minutes.

NKU scored in the 24th minute off a cross from the right side of the box with the kick going to the right side of the net inside the post. Detroit Mercy had a strong scoring chance late in the 43rd minute on a free kick. Dalton Amez took the kick and curved a perfect shot over the wall, but it hit the crossbar.

The Titans opened the second half strong, securing two corner kicks in the opening three minutes, but they couldn't capitalize on the chances. Tyler Moorman pushed a header wide later in the game, and Detroit Mercy was set up with a free kick from 30 yards out with just three minutes left, but Clauss' free kick on goal was turned away in the 88th minute. The Titans had one more corner kick, but they couldn't capitalize on that opportunity.

Clauss led the team with three shots with Moorman, Vushaj and freshman Kyle Bandyk each adding two shots. Spiro Pliakos made his return to the Titan lineup, playing 58 minutes and recording one shot. Goalkeeper Robbie Beckwell made two saves in net for the Titans.

Detroit Mercy had advantages in both shots (12-7) and corner kicks (7-3) in the contest.

All eight Titan seniors have played pivotal roles in the past five seasons for Detroit Mercy. Seven of the eight were part of the 2014 Co-Horizon League regular season championship squad and the Titans have 25 victories over the course of the past four years.
