DETROIT (10/7/2017) -- Using a golden goal by sophomore Max Becker in the 97th minute on Saturday, the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over visiting Horizon League foe IUPUI from Titan Field.

Becker caught the Jaguars and nearly everyone off guard, scoring the game-winner on a quick restart off a free kick from just outside the box after sophomore Jake Reitzloff was taken down in the 97th minute. His first collegiate goal found the left side of the net and the celebration ensued.

Detroit Mercy (6-4-2 overall) improved to 3-2 in Horizon League play and 5-0 this season from Titan Field. The Titans are 5-0 at home for the first time since 2003.

The Titans got on the scoreboard first when senior Tyler Moorman headed home his eighth goal of the season off a corner kick strike from classmate Adam Clauss. Moorman's goal came late in the first half in the 37th and put Detroit Mercy up 1-0.

IUPUI (0-10, 0-5 HL) would answer early in the second half from the same part of the field. The Jaguars used a cross from the corner that was headed in during the 49th minute to knot the game up 1-1. The goal ended Detroit Mercy's home shutout streak of 376 minutes and was just the second allowed at home all season.

The red, white and blue had numerous chances during the remainder of regulation and in the overtime session before Becker's golden goal. Senior Spencer Steinwascher boomed a kick just wide left in the 54th minute of play. Graduate transfer Dalton Amez knocked a ball off the post in the 63rd minute and in the next minute, Reitzloff beat the keeper to the ball in the box, but the IUPUI keeper got just enough of Reitzloff's shot to make the save.

Late in the match, freshman Kyle Bandyk pushed one high of the crossbar from just outside the box.

Detroit Mercy had six shots in overtime, with Moorman hitting a crossbar before Amez's bouncing rebound attempt was saved and then grabbed. Just one minute later, Reitzloff corralled a ball and was fouled just outside of the top of the box. Becker was quick to think and caught the Jaguars off guard in scoring the game-winner.

The Titans dominated on the stat sheet during the contest, out-shooting IUPUI by a 24-6 margin. Detroit Mercy also had all nine corner kicks in the first half and finished with a 12-5 edge in corners for the game.

Moorman had a game-high five shots, while Bandyk had four shots and Reitzloff finished with three shots in the contest. Senior goalkeeper Robbie Beckwell improved to 6-3-1 on the season, making one save in net.

Detroit Mercy had its chances early too, with senior Tyler Hughes' shot in the box saved by a defender at the goal line in the 11th minute. Moorman had a good look in the 21st minute of the game, but his shot was turned away.
