Men’s Basketball Falls To Seattle

NASHVILLE (11/18/2017) -- Sophomore Corey Allen led three Titans in double figures with 18 points, but a three-point barrage by Seattle was the difference as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team dropped a 102-71 contest in the first game of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting The Wounded Warrior Project Belmont subregional on Saturday.

Allen tallied 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting with a couple of 3-pointers. Junior Josh McFolley had 13 points and freshman Jermaine Jackson Jr., finished with 12 points, two assists and two steals. Graduate senior Roschon Prince had six points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds and senior Jaleel Hogan finished with six points and four boards.

Detroit Mercy (1-2) shot 38.7 percent for the game, but was 3-of-16 from behind the arc, while Seattle (2-2) was 15-of-23 from three-point territory. The Titans were also 20-of-23 (87%) at the free throw line.

The defense did force the Redhawks into 20 turnovers, posting seven steals on the night.

The Titans will close out the weekend event by facing Houston Baptist tomorrow at 4 p.m. (EST) tomorrow. There will be no live stream of the contest, but fans can listen on 910 AM Superstation or follow along on live stats.

First Half:
  • It was a game of runs by both teams in the first 20 minutes.
  • After a free throw to start the game by Seattle, the Titans came back with eight-straight points with four Titans scoring in that span.
  • Hogan then scored the next six points for the Titans as they took a 14-7 lead at the 12:54 mark.
  • Seattle went on an 18-5 run over the next four minutes before a three by Allen ended that.
  • The Titans were down by nine, 33-24, when they made an 8-0 charge, ending with four points from Prince, to pull within one, 33-32, with 4:32 remaining.
  • Detroit Mercy was down by one again at 35-34 off two free throws from Jackson Jr., but the Redhawks ended the half on a 14-6 run.
  • The Titans did see senior DeShawndre Black give the team some energy with a last-second layup to get the deficit under 10 heading into the break, 49-40.
  • Allen led the team with nine points, while Hogan and Jackson Jr., had six apiece.
  • Detroit Mercy forced 10 turnovers with five steals and scored 16 points in the paint.

Second Half:
  • Seattle started the second half with a pair of 3-pointers, but a triple by Allen early in the stanza and one by McFolley at 13:03 made it a 63-51 game with 13:03 left.
  • The Titans then saw the Redhawks go on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to extend their advantage.
  • Back-to-back baskets by Jackson Jr., and Allen pulled the team within 18, 75-57, at the 7:14 mark, but that was as close as Titans came.

Game Notes:
  • This was the first career meeting between the two schools.
  • The Titans have now faced 18 of the other 19 Division I Jesuit schools with only Saint Joseph's left to play.
  • Junior Tariiq Jones missed the game with an undisclosed injury.
  • The 20 free throws were the most since connecting on 21-of-24 at Green Bay last season.
  • Hogan is now 23 points away from becoming the 41st member of the Titans 1,000 point club.
  • Prince now has 44 career games with five or more rebounds.
  • Junior Gerald Blackshear Jr., tied his career high with three steals.
