DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (11/23/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team dropped a 72-44 game to Clemson during the opening day of the 2017 San Juan Shootout on Thursday from the Ocean Center.
Senior forward
Brianne Cohen posted her fourth-straight game in double figures with 13 points, including sinking 9-of-12 free throws. Fellow senior
Nicole Urbanick added eight points, while sophomore
Zoey Oatis added a career-best seven points off the bench for the Titans.
Detroit Mercy shot 9-of-46 from the field (19.6 percent), but sank 25-of-35 free throw attempts, getting to the line often throughout the contest.
The Titans started the game on a 4-0 run with buckets coming on back-to-back trips down the court by seniors
Brianne Cohen and
Nicole Urbanick. Detroit Mercy trailed 10-6 at the media timeout with 4:09 left in the first quarter, but Clemson went on a run to end the first stanza to take a 25-8 lead after one frame.
The red, white and blue showed its defensive mettle early in the second quarter, holding Clemson without a field goal for the first 4:49 of the stanza. The Titans had a 5-0 run during that stretch -- with four of those points coming off Cohen free throws -- to cut the deficit to 25-13.
After a Clemson bucket, Urbanick sank two more free throws and the score was 27-15 with 4:40 left in the half. Oatis added a 3-point play just before the break after grabbing an offensive bound, scoring on a lay-up and then adding the ensuing free throw after being fouled on the make. Oatis added two free throws just a minute later for five-straight points as the Titans trailed 35-21 at halftime.
Clemson added to its lead in the third quarter and Detroit Mercy trailed after three quarters, 59-34. Freshman
Lexey Tobel would hit a 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter and junior
Lola Ristovski followed with a pair of free throws just after to make the score 63-42, but it was as close as the Titans would get during the contest.
Urbanick sank all six free throws in the contest and Oatis made 2-of-3 field goal attempts and all three free throws in the game. Cohen had a team-best six rebounds.
