Morgan Girardi and
Lexie Kinmond each tallied four-point efforts Wednesday night, but the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team dropped a 21-11 game against host Michigan from Oosterbaan Field House.
The Titans (2-5) closed out their non-conference schedule with the game against the Wolverines. Girardi had a team-best four goals, while Kinmond also tallied a hat trick with three goals and added an assist. Senior
Kelsi Pritchard finished with one goal and two assists for Detroit Mercy.
The red, white and blue fell behind early in the contest but used a strong run in the latter half of the first 30 minutes. The Titans scored four of the final six goals of the first half with Kinmond opening the run with her second of the game. After a Michigan goal made it 10-2, Girardi fired home a shot off a feed from Pritchard, who then followed just over one minute later with a goal of her own, on an assist from Kinmond.
The Wolverines added a goal, but Detroit Mercy scored the final goal of the first half, with junior
Jessica Snyder beating the goalkeeper off a tough angle for her fourth marker of the year. Goalkeeper
Allison McDonough made a save in the final five seconds of the first half as Detroit Mercy trailed 11-5 at the break.
The Titans opened the second half with a goal to pull to within five, 11-6, as junior
Brianna Plester found the back of the goal off Pritchard's second assist just 53 seconds into the frame. Michigan scored the next two before Kinmond completed her hat trick with a hard shot to the top of the goal at the 19:39 mark of the second half.
Michigan scored the next four goals before Girardi ended the run with a free-position goal at the 13:44 mark of the second as the Titans trailed 17-8. The Wolverines would score four more before the Titans ended the game with three-straight markers. Junior
Jordyn Beam became the sixth Titan to score in the game and Girardi found the back of the net twice in the final 2:20 of the contest to complete her fourth hat trick of the season.
Plester led the team with four draw controls, while junior
Brittany Fenney tallied a team-best three caused turnovers. Junior
Lauren Webley and McDonough each had three ground balls with juniors
Emma DeYoung,
Jessica Snyder and
Taylor Spray each tallying two ground balls.
Detroit Mercy finished the game with more ground balls (16-13) and caused turnovers (9-5), while also holding the edge in draw controls in the second half (9-8). The Titans were 13-of-20 on clear attempts and finished the game with 21 shots, compared to 35 from the Wolverines.
The Titans were playing the Wolverines for just the second time in their nine-year history and the first time in Ann Arbor.
