DETROIT (8/19/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer squad hosted the final exhibition of the 2017 preseason on Saturday afternoon from Titan Field, falling to visiting Western Michigan University by a 4-0 margin.
Detroit Mercy had the first great scoring opportunity of the contest as senior
Spiro Pliakos broke away free down the right side of the field in the 10th minute. He pushed his shot inside the box just wide left of the goal.
Pliakos had all three of Detroit Mercy's shots in the first half. Western Michigan scored goals in the 14th and 39th minutes to lead 2-0 at halftime. The Broncos would go on to add two more goals in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper
Robbie Beckwell played all 90 minutes in net and turned away six shots in the contest -- including two consecutive, point-blank saves in the second half.
Sophomores
Jake Reitzloff,
Aleks Vushaj and
Collin Cavanaugh all had shots in the second half for Detroit Mercy, which finished with six shots in the game.
Twenty-one Titans earned playing time in the final exhibition, with many making their first appearances on Titan Field. Seven yellow cards were issued in the game -- three of them to Detroit Mercy. WMU led in the foul count, 19-12.
The Titans open the 2017 regular season on Friday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. against Stetson University. Admission into the game is free for all fans from Titan Field.
