Marina Manzo made nine saves, but the Pittsburgh offense was too strong as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team fell, 3-1, on the road to the Panthers on Wednesday night.
Pittsburgh (3-0-2) outshot Detroit Mercy (2-1-1), 20-7, in the contest and came up with a pair of goals in a four-minute span between late in the first half and early in the second.
The Titans mounted a second-half charge earning a penalty kick that senior
Rachel DeLuca buried in the net to make it 2-1 with less than 20 minutes remaining, but the Panthers ended the comeback with a marker at 85:11.Â
Detroit Mercy will now get ready to head out west to play in Northern Arizona's Mountain Classic as the red, white and blue face host Northern Arizona on Friday and Grand Canyon on Sunday.Â
Friday night's contest at NAU will start at 10 p.m., and will be televised live on FOX Sports Detroit Plus.
First Half
- The Pittsburgh offense came out firing with four shots in the first 10 minutes of the game, but Manzo kept the Panthers off the scoreboard with three saves.
- The Titans then started to get some offensive looks with three shots in the next 18 minutes, but senior Phylisha Drayton's attempt was blocked, DeLuca's was high and redshirt junior Caitlin Carroll's sailed wide.
- Manzo had two more saves in the first half before Pittsburgh broke through with a goal at 43:06.
Second Half
- The Panthers struck early in the period just 2:06 into play to take a 2-0 lead.
- Manzo came up with two more saves after that before the Titan offense got going as senior Suzie Redick and Drayton had shots saved at the 62:28 and 69:53 mark, respectively.
- A foul then led to DeLuca's penalty kick and goal at 73:20.
- Pittsburgh then added a late goal with less than five minutes left.

- It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
- The Titans were one of just 11 Division I teams to not allow a goal coming into the game as their clean sheet ended at 333:06. Â
- Manzo's nine saves were the most since posting nine against Baylor last season.Â
- Manzo now has 197 career saves moving Kristi Elliott for fifth in school history.
- It was DeLuca's third career penalty kick goal.Â
